ROBERT "STEVE" STEVEN MILLSPAUGH, age 42 of Vernon, passed away Friday, March 28, 2014 at his home.   A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.  Steve's family will receive friends at the funeral home 1 hour prior to the service.

Steve was born June 2, 1971 in Wisconsin to Robert and Sheri (Barshinger) Millspaugh.

Steve is survived by his wife, Rachael; 2 daughters: Heaven and Hailey; parents, Robert and Sheri Millspaugh; sister, Trysha (John) Maness; nieces and nephews: Nick, Amber, Jesse and Autumn McClure, Ryan, Adam, Kelsey, and Danielle Lott, Ali, Abi and Jay Stiefel, Jared, Justin, Jeffrey and Jason Maness.

ALMA LEE (WAGNER) DAVISON, went to her home in Heaven on March 25, 2014 at the age of 91.

Alma was born in Carterville Illinois on March 8, 1923. She was a loving wife and mother and lifelong homemaker. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Durand where she worshipped regularly.

Alma was predeceased by her husband and life partner Marvin Jacobson in 2003, and her beloved son Randy in 1977. She was also predeceased by her father Lewis Allen Wagner; mother Mary Ellen (Peters) Wagner; a sister, June (Wagner) Ross. and a brother-in-law, Leo Ross.

Alma was a caring grandmother and great grandmother who always put her family first. She is survived by her children, Deborah Gillett of Mason, Judy (Frank) Trotter of Perry, Rick (Sue) Jacobson of Byron, Melissa (Jerry) Foy of Dimondale, and Ronald Jacobson of Byron.

Grandchildren missing their “grandma” are Jennifer (Jeff Ditmar) Trotter and Jacob Trotter, Sarah (Matt) Thornton and Jordon (Justine) Foy, Ryan, Michael (Amy), Ashley and Brittney Jacobson, Matthew (Courtney) and Rachel Gillett, Jessica Johnson and Megan (Ben) Howard; and 17 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two nephews, Greg (Linda) and Doug (Kathy) Ross.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Grace Lutheran Church, 4269 S. Durand Rd., Durand. Pastor A.J. Kunde officiating. Burial will be in the Byron Cemetery, Byron. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Watkins Funeral Home, 501 N. Saginaw St. Durand, Michigan on Friday, March 28, 2014 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Saturday at the church from 10:00 am until the time of the service.

JUNE E. LEWIS, June E. Lewis, age 86 of Owosso, formerly of Bancroft, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the Ovid Healthcare Center.


A Memorial service will be held at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Bancroft on Saturday March 29, 2014 at 11:00.   Pastor John Walworth will officiate.   The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.

June was born on September 26, 1927 in FLint, MI, the daughter of Raymond & Evelyn (Lloyd) Chapman.  She married George Lewis on December 27, 1954 in Angola, IN.   He predeceased her March 18, 2004.  She lived most of her life in Bancroft and the past 10 years in Owosso.   She was a member of the Bancroft Lions Club, the Owosso Eagles Club, American Legion, liked to do woodworking and crocheting, play bingo and shuffleboard.  June was a hairdresser, having owned her own business in Bancroft.  

She is survived by her son, Thomas (Sherry) Lewis of Owosso, 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 2 sisters; Evelyn (Gerald) Brown of San Clemente, CA, Mildred (Arthur) Lewis of Bancroft and many nieces and nephews,   She was predeceased by her husband, son Rodney Natzel, 4 brothers Raymond, Robert, Edward and Stanley Chapman and her parents.

NELL IRENE ARMSTRONG, Nell "Irene" Armstrong, age 91 of Durand, formerly of Flint, passed away on Monday March 24, 2014 at Durand Convalescent Center.  Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 28, 2014, 1:00 PM at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.  Family will receive friends on Thursday from 4 PM to 8 PM. Irene was born March 5, 1923 to Benjamin and Phoebe Blair in Cullman, AL. Irene was a member of the West Court Street Church of God and had worked there in Nursery Care.  She is survived by her sons: Lonnie (Linda) Armstrong of Au Gres, formerly of Owosso and Ronald (Sally) Armstrong of Mena AR., formerly of Owosso.  Also surviving are 3 grandchildren: Joshua, Ashten, Aaron (AJ); her sister Mary Ruth (Lloyd) Johnson of AL. and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Emmett who passed in 2012, as well as her granddaughter Valerie in 1999, 2 brothers and 1 sister.  Memorial contributions are suggested to First Church of God in Owosso.  Online condolences can be made at www.watkinsfuneralhomes.com


FRANK HENRY BLOUNT, Frank H. Blount age 79 of Durand, MI passed away Monday, March 24, 2014 at Memorial Healthcare Center. Family will recieve friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel for a memorial visitation.

Frank was born February 17, 1935 in Durand, MI a son of Wilbur and Mildred (Ritter) Blount. On June 27, 1953 he was married to Romaine Benear. They were married for 60 years when she preceded him in death in 2013. Frank was a little league and pony league baseball coach for 10 years. He enjoyed playing the piano but his greatest joy was his wife and family. Prior to his retirement in 2004 he owned and operated Frank's Service Station for over 50 years. He also worked and owned the family farm that meant so much to him because it had been in the family for generations.

Frank is survived by his children, Michael D. (Beth) Blount, Debra K. (Jeremy) Vik, Curtis E. (Teresa) Blount and Janine M. (E.J.) Anderson; grandchildren, Mark, Jenni, Laura, Nicholas, Jessica and Jared; great grandchildren, Ashton, Boston, Joshua and Kailey; brother, Robert Blount; sister, Mary Lou Granger and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Romaine; both of his parents; great grandson, Jackson and sisters, Helen, Erma, Elaine and Doris.

JOHN WILLIAM CUTCHALL III, age 42 of Durand, died March 20, 2014.  Services will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2014, 11AM at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes in Durand.  The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 25, from 1 PM to 3PM and 5PM to 9PM.  John was very active and enjoyed salmon fishing, bowling, hunting, karaoke,  golf and spending time outside.  He is survived by his wife, Audra; his children: Chrysti (Trevor Graves) Maccombs of Vernon, Miguel Garcial III of LA., Christopher (Emily Albright) M. Cutchall of Saline, Baylee S. NORMA GALE CANNAS, “Gale” to her friends, died Sunday March 9, 2014 after extended health problems at age 76.

She was a 48 year resident of Durand, MI. and survived by her husband of fifty years Dr. Roberto Canas. Mrs. Canas leaves behind a legacy of long time friends in the area as well as in the Birmingham, AL. area where she grew up. Gale was well known for her genuine compassion and love for others. She grew up as a barefoot country girl and made a seamless transition to a very classy lady who could and did talk to anyone about anything. She was well known for her generosity and willingness to help anyone of a moment’s notice.

She will be sadly missed by her husband Roberto, son Don Wilson of Foley, AL. sister Martha (Kit) Slatsky of Moody AL. and many nieces, nephews, cousins and grandchildren. She was also a second "mother" to Michael, Gary, Cabot and Amanta Canas.

She is preceded in death by her son Michael Wilson, parents Orbry and Armie Reid and brother, Travis Reid.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at the Durand First United Methodist Church, 10016 E. Newburg Rd. Durand, Michigan 48429 with Pastor John Walworth officiating.

AMELIA LOUISE EPLEY, Amelia Louise Epley, age 95 of Durand, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2014 surrounded by her family. Amelia was born on January 4, 1919, the daughter of Frank & Lillian (Maurer) Kennedy. She was employed at Redmond Motors of Owosso and retired from Universal Electric Corporation of Owosso. She married Otis Epley on March 17, 1945 and is survived by her daughter Linda (Robert) Kral, grandchildren Robert (Amber) Kral, Mary Lou Kral, Sherry (James) Loynes, Terri (Robert) Paradise and 10 great grandchildren and a sister Mary Bender of Owosso. Several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis, on February 9, 2005, sisters Frances Lake, Joyce Currie, brothers William, Duane, Rolland and their spouses Ned, Glen, Flossie, Margaret, Betty, brother-in-law Herbert Epley and his wife Christine.

JOSEPH "JOEY" ANTONIO HOLLOWAY II, age 23 of Durand, formerly of Morrice, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Pastor John Ashley will be officiating with burial to follow in Byron Cemetery. Joey was born March 1, 1991 in Flint. He grew up and attended school in Morrice and later attended high school in Perry, graduating in 2009. Joey later graduated from Compass College of Cinematic Arts in Grand Rapids. He had a passion for writing and film making and was a free-lance film maker. Joey also enjoyed long boarding, snowboarding and playing basketball.

Joey will be greatly missed by his mother, Bonnie (Bartlett) Frazier of Durand; father, Joseph Antonio Holloway I, of Durand; 3 brothers: James (Monica) BeDen, George (Justine) BeDen, Gerald (Hether Domby) BeDen; nieces and nephews: Domonick Fornwall, Caitlin Bessinger, Shore, Skylar, Trista, Tiffany, Natalia, George, Jr., Brandon and Christina BeDen, Wyatt and Gracie Campbell; grandparents: Mary Bartlett and Marion Booth; great grandparents, Rose and William McLaughlin; aunts and uncles: Tammie McLaughlin, Brad (Jamie) Bartlett, Pam (Alvin) Powell, several cousins and many friends.

Joey was preceded in death by his grandpa, Russell Bartlett.

ERIC E. MILLIMAN, age 41 of Durand, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Pastor William Stenke will be officiating with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon. Eric's family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 4-8 p.m.

Eric was born November 27, 1972 in Coldwater, Michigan the son of Lonnie and Trudy Milliman. He attended Durand High School, graduating in 1991.

Eric was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed fishing up north and shooting pool and playing shuffle board. He was a U of M and Red Wings fan and Dale, Jr. and Steelers fanatic. He was fond of Fox News and could debate with anyone on current events. Eric loved his family dearly, and was a dedicated and loyal friend to a fault.

Eric will be remembered by his parents: Trudy (Mike) Bemis of Durand, Lonnie (Diane) Milliman of Hudson; siblings: Cory Bemis of Grand Blanc, Kurt (Susan) Milliman of Lewisville, TX, Amy (Jason) Richardson of Jackson, MI; nieces and nephews: Brooklynn, Logan and Mitchell Bemis, Vaughan and Bae Milliman, Jack and Sara Richardson; grandparents: Peggy Gendron, Shirley Bemis, Blanche and Willard Milliman, Helen Bishop; several "very" special aunts and uncles and many friends.

Eric was preceded in death by his grandparents: Leonard Gendron, Robert Bemis and Edward Bishop.

JEANETTE ALMEDIA MCCLOY, Jeanette A. McCloy, age 89, formerly of Vernon, MI passed away on Saturday February 15, 2014 at Welcome Home Assisted Living in Owosso.

Funeral services will be held Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Corunna on Tuesday February 18, 2014 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Janet Larner will officiate with burial to follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Vernon. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday 2-4 & 6-8 pm.

Jeanette was born on November 29, 1924 in Shelby, Michigan, the daughter of Omer and Laura (Bankert) Near. On September 7, 1946 she married Robert B. McCloy in Hart, Michigan and he predeceased her on November 19, 1995 after 49 years of marriage. She was a Registered Nurse for the Shiawassee County Health Dept. before retiring. She was a member of the Corunna United Methodist Church, the Michigan Nurses Association, enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, cooking for holidays and gardening.

Jeanette is survived by her son, David B. (Sherene) McCloy of Caro, daughter Susan (Raymond) Turnwald of Corunna, granddaughters Laura (Ted) Underwood of Owosso, Alaina (Jerry) Snider of Ovid, 3 great grandchildren, step sister Kathleen Steinman of New Hamburg, Ontario, Canada. LAVADA PEARL DOUGLASS, age 99 of Durand, passed away on Friday February 14, 2014.

Funeral services will be held at the Durand First Congregational Church on Tuesday February 18, 2014 at 1:00 PM. The Rev. Donald Rice will officiate with burial to follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Vernon. The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Durand on Monday 3-8 PM and on Tuesday at the church one hour before the service.

Pearl was born in Buena Vista, Tennessee on May 25, 1914, the daughter of Priestly Bethel Barnes and Lavada Jordan. She went to school in Holcomb, Missouri and on May 16, 1930 she married Bennett C. Douglass in Piggott, Arkansas. He predeceased her August 5, 1997 after 67 years of marriage. Pearl was a member of the First Congregational Church of Durand and played the piano and organ for over 65 years for Sunday services and Sunday School throughout her church years. She worked for J.C. Penney Co. for 22 years in merchandise control and was Clement Township Treasurer for 20 years.

She is survived by her 6 grandchildren; Lynne (Brian) Wooton, Lee (Craig) Bowman, Karen (Jeff) Semple, Nancy (Jeff) Loren, all of Durand, Scott Douglass of Clio and Kelly Douglass of Flint, 11 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, daughters-in-law Carole Douglass of Durand and Peggy Douglass of Clio. She was raised by her Uncle and Aunt, Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Barnes following the death of her parents. She was predeceased by her husband, sons Bennett and Michael, 6 brothers and 4 cousins that were like brother and sisters to her. ZELMA IRENE SEXTON, age 106 of Durand, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Durand Church of the Nazarene, 9725 E. Monroe Rd. Durand, MI 48429. Pastor Michael McCarty will be officiating with interment at Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon. Irene's family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel on Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. and again on Saturday at the church 1 hour prior to the service.

Irene was born March 14, 1907 in Shiawassee County, the daughter of Jesse and Catherine Alchin. She was a graduate of Durand High School. On May 31, 1958, she married LaVerne Sexton in Caro, Michigan. He preceded her in death.

She was a life long member of the Durand Church of the Nazarene. She also worked as Secretary to the Director of Nurses at McLaren Hospital in Flint for 16 years. After her husband retired in 1967 they moved to St. Cloud, FL where they lived for 23 years. During that time she was the church organist and her husband was the music director at the Nazarene Church. Due to his ill health, they moved back to Durand in 1990.

Mrs. Sexton is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Ed) Morey of Swartz Creek, daughter-in-law, Bessie Sexton of Durand and step-son, Donald (Beverly) Sexton of Brighton; 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, LaVerne, both parents, step-son, David Sexton and sister, Nita Lapp.

ROBERT A. MIDDLETON, age 90 of Durand, passed away February 1, 2014 at Veteran's Hospital in Saginaw. Bob was born in Durand to Fred and Blanche (Alexander) Middleton August 21, 1923 and graduated from Durand High School class of '42.

Bob was a proud Veteran of WWII, serving in the US Navy. After the war he continued to serve his country and community as a Lifetime Member of both VFW Post 2272 and the North Newberg Masonic Lodge 161. He operated the Gulf Service Station in Durand for several years, mentoring many younger men, sharing both his time and automotive knowledge. Bob retired from Atlas Automotive in 1988 to pursue woodworking, clock repair and golfing.

He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. Surviving is Bob's one true love of 67 yrs."Peaches" (Marjorie Dowell) and sons: Randy (Peggy) of N.C., Ricky (Brenda) of Durand and daughter Ronda also of Durand. Grandchildren Noel Handley of CA., Bart Middleton of CA., Renee Middleton of AnnArbor, Great granddaughter Ashlee Handley of AL., sister Lucille (Paul) Hueter of AnnArbor and many beloved nieces and nephews.

MARION JANE WILLIAMSON, age 78 of New Port Richey, FL, formerly of Durand, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014 in Florida. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon. Mrs. Williamson's family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.

Marion was born on September 28, 1935 in Durand to Leon and Chrystal (Vincent) Ball. She attended Barid Country School in Durand. She married Gerald O. Williamson August 30, 1952. Marion was a homemaker and also employed by Universal Electric in Owosso.

She dearly loved spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed ceramics, china paintings, and needle point.

Marion will be greatly missed by her children: Lynda (Keith O'Connor) Adams, Dolores (Mike) Bertoglio, LuAnn (Larry) Brunger, Lana (Terry) Goul; grandchildren: Angela (Robert) Smith, Jennifer (Mike) Thompson, Shelley (Marshael Nations) Ezinga, Christopher (Amanda) Brunger, Amy (Mathew) Perry, Abra (Jordan Stewart) Patsey, Travis Goul, Tonya (Mike) Scribner, Tarah Goul, Tamah (Matt) Gustafson; many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in law: Barbara and Lucille and many good friends.

MARJORIE MAY BEDELL, age 86 of Durand, MI passed away Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 27, 2014 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Jennings-Lyons Chapel of Owosso. Pastor Ilko Tchakarov will be officiating. Marjorie was born February 2, 1927 in Owosso, MI a daughter of Walter and Hazel (Nesbitt) Smith. On February 5, 1948 she married Jack Bedell. He preceded her in death on July 30, 2011. Marjorie was a member of the Owosso Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed working with the youth at her church. She loved family get-togethers, holidays, gardening, canning, and baking pies. She loved to cook for her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

Marjorie is survived by her children, Sherry (Richard) Schultz, Debbie (Ben) Schultz and John (Judy) Bedell; 7 grandchildren, Michelle, Kathy, Amy, Daniel, Megan, Tom, and Katie; 5 great grandchildren, Brendan, Christian, Abigail, Morgan and Ryan.

GLADYS KATHRYN SUTTON, Gladys K. (Hill) Sutton, age 75 of Durand, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2014 at her home. Gladys was born May 23, 1938 in Bancroft, the daughter of Leslie and Odessa (Ireland) Hill. She enjoyed playing bingo and loved her family.

Mrs. Sutton is survived by 6 children: Cathy (Norm) Poblette, LaVern Perry, Roberta Perry, Robert (Beth) Perry, Dennis Perry, Karen Perry; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

CHARLES "CARL" JOSEPH VARGO, age 90 of Linden, formerly of Flint and Durand, died January 16, 2014. Carl was born January 28, 1923 in Arcadia, Pennsylvania, the son of Stephen and Anna Vargo. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII. He married Elizabeth on October 1st, 1949 in Flint. Carl retired from AC Spark Plug, Flint, MI in 1986 with 45 years of service.

Carl was a talented craftsman. He enjoyed working in his garden and tinkering in his workshop. Most of all, he loved spending time with family.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Betty; son Steve and wife Sharon; son Rob and wife Deb; daughter Kathy; son Jim and wife Deb; grandchildren, Nick, Heather, Kyle, Chris, Adam, Sam, and Ellie; one brother, Bob and wife Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Joe, and son-in-law Matt.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 700 E. Columbia Dr. Durand, MI 48429. Fr. Jeffrey A. Poll will be officiating with burial to follow in Yerian Cemetery, Lennon. JERALD JAMES DORRANCE, age 61 of Durand, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Durand Church of the Nazarene, 9725 E. Monroe Rd. Durand, MI 48429 with Pastor Mike McCarty officiating. Jerry was born December 16, 1952 in Durand to George and Elizabeth (Wickenshire) Dorrance. He attended Durand High School, graduating in 1971.

Jerald was a master craftsman. He could do it all, from building things to fixing cars. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and family gatherings. He was a member of the Durand Church of the Nazarene. On March 18, 2013 Jerry married Nancy Simmerman in Durand.

Mr. Dorrance is survived by his wife, Nancy; 3 daughters: Renee (A.J.) Zwolensky of Owosso, Selina (Joe) Feldhouse of Durand, Deidra Dorrance of Durand; grandchildren: Alexander, Nathan, Jacob, Olivia, Alanna, Zane, Ashley, Jaidyn, Aleshia, Hailey and Izzabell; 2 brothers: Edward (Elizabeth) Dorrance of Corunna and George Dorrance of Virginia; sister, Verna (Steve) Grosso of Florida; 4 step-children: Jessica Christmas, Renee Roman, Amy Roman, Sarah Roman; 2 former step-children: Edward and Joel Taylor as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many "adopted children."

ROSEMAE KATHLEEN STRICKLAND, age 80 of Bancroft, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Sparrow Health Systems in Lansing. Rose was born March 19, 1933 in Freeland, Michigan to Medford and Julia (Barko) Merrell. She resided most of her life in the Bancroft and Durand areas. She was married to Robert Strickland until his passing in 1987.

Rose was a Baker at Carter's IGA in Durand until her retirement. She enjoyed traveling, cooking family meals and spending time with her family.

Susie was born August 19, 1919 in Mayville, Michigan to Tom and Anna (Thayer) Johnson. She was a resident of Lennon for over 60 years. Susie was a homemaker, Cub Scout Den Mother, correspondent for the Owosso Argus Press, a Daughter of the American Revolution member, and a caretaker for elders in their homes. She attended local churches and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Gaines, Michigan.

ROBERT J. CORWIN, age 91 of Durand, died Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at his favorite coffee shop in Durand, surrounded by many of his friends. Robert was born June 28, 1922 in Durand, a son of Dell J. and Minnie Marie (Blount) Corwin. He married Doris E. Corwin on June 10, 1942 in Corunna. She preceded him in death on April 27, 2010.

Mr. Corwin was employed at Simplicity Engineering for 20 years. He later worked for Marsh Monument and finally Fenton Machine and Tool, retiring in 1987. Robert was also a farmer for many years.

Mr. Corwin is survived by 5 children: Leonard (Pam) Corwin of Durand, Robert B. (Lauri) Corwin of Durand, Judy (David) Bristley of Morrice, Dorrene (Max) May of Standish, Edna Kay Thompson of Durand; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marie Caverson and several nieces and nephews.

GAYLE RYKER, JR., age 86 of Bancroft, passed away at his home on Monday December 16, 2013. He was born in Corunna, MI on May 16, 1927, the son of Gayle & Wavel (Langworthy) Ryker, Sr. Mr. Ryker served his country in the Army and then the Air Force. On December 31, 1976 he married Patricia Ann Ivanits in Durand. Gayle worked as a Quality Inspector at the Buick Motor Division Factory 12 stamping plant in Flint before retiring. He loved to play the piano, an avid reader, did woodworking, was a horseshoe champion, and while in the military, was a golden glove boxing champion in N. Carolina.  Gayle was best known for his music, kindness and sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife 40 years, Pat, daughters Brenda Dungerow of Durand and Marsha (William) Karas of Flushing, sister Virgilene (George) Wingier of Roscommon, MI, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Bobbi & Jerry Moore of Winnebago, IL, niece Bobbi Jenkins, grandchildren Monica Ryker (Don) Van Auken, John Dungerow, Kristin (Matt) Dubowski, and Jenna (Jon) Speyers.

KAREN LEA STINGER, age 70 of Durand, MI passed away Sunday, December 15, 2013 peacefully at her home. Karen was born April 10, 1943 in Detroit, MI a daughter of Leo and Bernice (Szczepanski) Jordan. On July 1, 1966 she was married to Richard James Stinger in Detroit moving to Durand in 1967. She was a member of the Durand Rotary, D.D.A. and St. Mary's Catholic Church. She loved her grandchildren, enjoyed sewing, gardening and shopping. Prior to her retirement in 2006, she had been employed by the R.S. Green Agency for over 30 years.

Prior to his retirement in 2005 he had been working in construction for many years.

Katherine was born in Port Huron, MI to the daughter of William and Nancy Maplethorpe.  She graduated from Yale High School in 1991 and from Michigan State University in 1995 with a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice.  She went on to graduate from the Mid-Michigan Police Academy at Lansing Community College.  She then went on to be a police officer with the City of Lansing for 10 years, where she proudly served as a road patrol officer as well as a Field Training Officer, Crisis Team member, Human Resource Officer and a Negotiator with the START Team.  She then became Director of the Mid-Michigan Police Academy at Lansing Community College for the next five years before she was diagnosed with cancer.  She took special joy and pride in the training of  future law enforcement officers.  It was her passion.  She married Scott Winslow on June 13, 1998 in Port Huron , MI.  They have two children, Kyle (12) and Jessica (9).  She enjoyed nothing more in life than being a mother. She never missed a sporting event or activity.  She has positively affected the lives of many people and will be dearly missed.  She is survived by her husband Scott and children Kyle and Jessica of Durand, her parents William and Nancy Maplethorpe of Avoca and sisters Angela (Marvin) Gill of Howell and Rebecca (Evan) Ketover of Windermere, FL.  She is also survived by her nieces Eva and Johanna Gill of Howell and cousins Brenda (Keith) Ski of Casco and Theresa (Michael) Millsap of Avoca.  She was preceded in death by her grandparents Russel and Dorothy Maplethorpe and Maynard and Verna Hanneke. Geraldine was bor July 31, 1946 in Sprigg, W.V. a daughter of David and Tera (Witt) Mitchem. She was a member of the Durand AMVETS, Moose Lodge and Ladies Auxiliary Eagles Club. Her hobbies included gardening, working in the yard, taking care of her dogs, shopping, cooking, and going to her cabin up north.

Carol was born February 9, 1930 to Lawrence and Irene (Young) O’Connor in Pontiac Michigan. Carol attended Durand Schools and graduated from St. Paul’s Catholic School in Owosso in 1947. She married Gaylord L. Bancroft on October 2, 1948. After raising her family, Carol was a Teachers Aid at Durand Schools. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Durand, belonged to St. Mary’s Altar Society and was a member of Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel.

She is survived by her children: Lorraine Goul of Durand, Lawrence (Ellen) Bancroft of Kalamazoo, Denise Chadwell of Byron, Greg (Danette) Bancroft of Durand, Gaylon (Tammy) Bancroft of Marietta Georgia., Jeffrey (Robin) Bancroft of Durand, 25 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 1 great-great granddaughter and special friend Rhonda Middleton. DONNA WILMA TOBEY was born September 21, 1912 to Frank and Lilia (Kent) Scribner on the family farm near Bancroft. Except for the years she attended college in Ypsilanti and the final years of life when she was in foster care, Donna prided herself in having lived her entire life within a short distance from the farm on which she was born.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Bancroft Chapel with Pastor Norm Beckwith officiating. Family will greet friends on Sunday from 2-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Fremont Cemetery, Bancroft.

Donna attended Fremont Country School and graduated from Bancroft High School in 1928 at age 15. She enrolled in Michigan State Normal College (Eastern Michigan University), earning her Life Teaching Certificate in 1931 and Bachelor of Arts degree in 1932. Upon graduation, she returned to Shiawassee County and taught in the Eddy School, Vernon School, and Bancroft School, where she also served as principal.

On April 2, 1940, Donna married Elstin Tobey in Fremont, Ohio and took several years off from her teaching career. Elstin passed away in September 1966.

Donna returned to teaching in the early 1950s as a third grade teacher at Perry Elementary School, from where she retired in 1973.

Donna attended the Bancroft Methodist Church and was an active member in the Bancroft Monday Study Club, Bancroft Order of the Eastern Star, Shiawassee County Historical Society, and Shiawassee Chapter of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. She was a superintendent of the women's division of the Shiawassee County Fair for many years. While teaching, Donna was a member of the Perry Education Association and Michigan Education Association.

While she still enjoyed the vitality of her Golden Years, Donna loved traveling with her friends and family, making crafts, spending time in her gardens, and the company of her cats.

She is predeceased by her husband Elstin. Survivors include daughter Donna and son-in-law Brent Little of Bancroft; grandsons Lance (Jacalyn) Little of Owosso and Layne (Kary) Little of Durand; and grandchildren Everett Little, Zachary Merrill and Samantha Merrill.

Through a century of life, Donna has touched countless lives through her endearing spirit and kindness. Donna will be fondly remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, devoted educator, and a caring and compassionate person. Richard was born July 10, 1950 the son of Richard and Bernice Hawes. He worked for Roy Craft Prefab Homes and Moore Iron Works. He served our Country in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1973.

JEAN DORTHEA JOHNSON, age 80 of Durand, passed away Friday, November 22, 2013 at White Hills Healthcare Center in East Lansing. Per her wishes, there will be no services held.

Jean was born July 31, 1933 in Kennet, Missouri, daughter of Easter and Lillie (Key) Martin. She graduated from Flint Central High School and later on June 25, 1973, she married Virgil Johnson in Durand. He passed on May 13, 1992.

Mrs. Johnson worked at the Durand Hospital for many years as well as the Village Clinic in Flint.

She enjoyed cooking and working in the yard taking care of her flowers. She also loved watching U of M football and the Detroit Tigers. She was a member of the Durand VFW Auxiliary.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Gary) Burr; grandchildren: Carrie (Jay) McLeod, Eric (Ladonna) Burr, Andrea (Darrick) Swanson; great grandchildren: Cayla and Hanna McLeod, Allyson and Evan Burr, Evan, Luke and Dylan Swanson; sister, Etta (Wayne) Benhart; brother, Bill (Karen) Martin; daughter-in-law, Shelly Baker; special niece and nephew, Susie and Jack Engel along with many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; son, Kenneth Baker; brothers: Wyman, Wendall, Jerry, Thomas and her sister, Marie.

MICHAEL JOHN FORD, age 53 of Durand passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013 at his home.

NINA L. (ESCOTT) DASSANCE, age 93 of Bancroft passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Serenity House in Byron.

Funeral services wil be on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Corunna Chapel with Pastor Kevin McGinnity officiating. Family will greet friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Pine Tree Cemetery in Corunna.

Nina was born in Corunna on June 16, 1920 to Oscar and Blanche (Raymond) Escott. On March 15, 1939 she married Donald I. Dassance, he predecesed her in 2002. Together they raised two children Janet and Donald W. Nina graduated from Corunna High School with the class of 1937.

She and her husband farmed for several years and she worked in several places, retiring from General Motors in 1979. They spent several years in Bushnell, FL in the winters after retiring. She loved working in her yard and her home and being with her family. She spent the last few years at Serenity House in Byron.

Those left to mourn her are daughter, Janet(Thayer)Gulick, daughter-in-law, Rosemary Dassance, sister Ginny Ruhl, sister-in-law, Lela Escott and several nieces and nephews, nine grandchildren, Ricky Thayer, Randy(Cindy)Thayer, Tammy Baumgras, Terry (Melissa)Thayer, Larry (Audrey) Thayer, Rob (Lory) Thayer, Cathy Dassance, Robin (Tom) Legacy and David Dassance, 20 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by son, Donald, brother, Howard, sister, Mildred Brown, granddaughter,Tina Ward,granddaughter-in-law Tammy (Weld) Thayer, son-in-law Lou Gulick and brother -in-law, Bob Ruhl.

BEVERLY JEAN SITES, age 70 of Durand, passed away Monday, November 18, 2013 at her home. Born August 16, 1943 in Flint, the daughter of Floyd and Vera (Todd) Gifford, Beverly grew up in Durand and graduated from Durand High School. On January 10, 1959 she married Donald Lee Sites in Durand and together raised 4 children.

Mrs. Sites was very active in volunteer work. She volunteered in Owosso with Community Mental Health, in Flint with battered women shelters as well as helping with Special Olympics. In her earlier years, Mrs. Sites liked skydiving with her husband. She enjoyed water activities and camping. But above all things, she looked forward to the many family get togethers.

Mrs. Sites is survived by her husband of 54 years, Donald; 4 children: Sherry (Ronald) Bendfeild of Flint, Denise Root of Durand, Julie (Bradley) Simon of Remis, Donald Lee Sites II of Lennon; 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; brother, Lloyd Gifford and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert Gifford.

KAROLA JOSEPHINE KLETTE, age 86 of Durand, MI passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013 peacefully at her home. Karola was born November 11, 1927 in Fluda, Germany a daughter of George and Maria Dockhorn. In 1976 she was married to Donald Klette. Donald preceded her in death in 2003. Karola was a proud member of the Lioness Club. Prior to her retirement she had worked for the Durand DVA for many years. She was the first woman to join.

Karola is survived by her grandchildren, James (Katie) Geyer, Sonya Adams and (Chad Bidlock), Amber Geyer and (Jason Babka), Donald (Tara) Geyer, Craig (Kem) Harvey, Cory Witherell and Kristopher Geyer; many great grandchildren, step-children, Michael Klette and Debbie (Neil) Randall and families; daughter-in-law, Carolyn (Chris) McKnight and special friend, Mary Kallin. She was preceded in death by her second husband, Donald; first husband, Clifton Geyer; sons, James and Dale Geyer and step-daughter, Christine Hudson.

STORMIE LYN DALTON TOBIAS, a very highly spirited young lady, passed away suddenly in a house fire Wednesday, November 13, 2013. Stormie graduated from Durand High School this past Spring, as well as Mane Street Academy in Owosso where she became licensed in hair. She had also started taking classes at Baker College where she was working toward being a Medical Assistant. She grew up as a Railroader in Durand and lived it true and blue.

Stormie is survived by her parents, Marian Jean-Corey and Len Alvin Tobias of Lennon; brothers: Darwin Robert Lee Tobias, James William Roscoe Tobias, grandparents: Darwin Alvin and Ann Tobias, Delores and William Horton; great grandparents: George and Marian Maron, Mabel Corey as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.

ANN ELIZABETH JONES, age 78 of Owosso, formerly of Durand, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at Oliver Woods Retirement Community in Owosso. Private family services will be held.

Ann was born January 2, 1935 in Ohio, a daughter of Robert and Leona (Stevens) Requarth. She graduated from the Miami University in Ohio with her Bachelor's Degree as a Dietitian. Ann enjoyed traveling and gardening.

Maxine was born October 30, 1931 in Flint, a daughter of the late Matthew and Eunice (Marks) Lyden. On June 9, 1951, Maxine married Leonard Steve Uricek in Flint and together raised 4 children. Mr. Uricek died January 6, 2010.

Mrs. Uricek was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Durand.

"Bud" was born November 17, 1932 in Flint, MI a son of Nelson and Rose Marie (Ade) Grumley. On January 3, 1953 he was married to Nancy J. Clough. He was a lifetime member of the Corunna V.F.W., the Michigan Bow Hunters Association, National Elk Federations and former member of the Durand J.C.'s. Prior to his retirement in 1985 he had been employed by General Motors for 34 1/2 years.

"Bud" is survived by his wife, Nancy Grumley; children, Scott (Neddie) Grumley, Kirk (Trudy) Grumley, Linda (Dave) Oginsky, Robert (Heather) Grumley, and Jodi (Ron) Collins; 13 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 4 step-great grandchildren; brothers, Charles Grumley and Keith Taylor; and sister, Barbra Vincent. JOHN GOTTLAB HAHN, age 86 of Durand, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2013 at the Durand Senior Care and Rehab Center. John was born May 14, 1927 in Mohawk, MI the son of John and Clara (McKenna) Hahn. On August 13, 1949 John married Crescence Provost in Hubble, MI. She preceded him in death on Feb. 21, 2005. John served his country faithfully in the United States Navy during WWII, being honorably discharged in 1946. John retired in 1990 from Reichold Chemical in Ferndale, MI. He was a life member of the Durand VFW Reed-Raymond Post 2272, past commander of the Durand Amvets Post 2273, a member of the Durand Moose Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Durand Lions Club and a past member of the Shriners of Hazel Park.

He is survived by 6 children: Daniel (Jane) Hahn of Sterling Hts., formerly of Hazel Park, Sharon Hahn of West Branch, Crescence (Tim) Chrzanowski of White Lake, William (Judy) Hahn of Peck, Christine (Ron) Soper of Garden City and Susan Ratliff of Madison Hts.; 2 daughters-in-law: Laura and Sue; 14 Grandchildren, many Great Grandchildren and more to come.

DR. RENAE SUE CARTER, Dr. Renae Sue Carter age 50 of Corunna died of a sudden illness this past weekend. A memorial service will be 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 29 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes in Durand. Rev. Fr. Russ Merrill will be officiating. Family will receive friends on Monday from 4-8 PM.

Renae was born May 21, 1963 in Grayling, MI a daughter of Raymond and Grace Carter. She graduated from Houghton Lake High School, Michigan State University and Kirksville, MO School of Osteopathy. Renae worked for Health Delivery, Inc. in both Owosso and Imlay City. Her biggest love was working with migrant workers. She enjoyed travelling, touring Europe in high school with Blue Lakes Fine Arts camp. She also toured the United States and Canada with family and friends. She returned from a cruise to Alaska in early September and was an excellent photographer and particularly loved photographing lighthouses and covered bridges. Renae was single, devoting her life to being a physician and caring for others. She will be greatly missed by her patients.

Renae is survived by her sister, Joan Durling of Vernon, MI; nephew, Kurt (Karen) Durling of East Lansing; Hayden and Evan; and her beloved cat, Chessie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Grace Carter of Roscommon, MI and by her brother-in-law, Keith Durling of Vernon, MI.

ROSEMARY "JEANNE" DICKIE of Durand, MI, passed away on October 18, 2013 at the Durand Senior Care and Rehab Center at age 88. Jeanne was born in Durand and after getting married she and her husband, David Dickie, lived in Cohoctah and then Howell where they raised their three children. After retiring they moved back to Durand.

Jeanne was married to David for 47 years. He was a decorated World War II pilot and a POW. Jeanne enjoyed bowling, dancing, sewing, card games, and baking. She loved having holiday meals for her family.

Jeanne is survived by her 3 children: daughter, Davette Lang of Durand and sons, Michael (Carole) of Lexington, Kentucky, and John (Lana) of Flint; 8 grandchildren: Rachel, Tonya, Amanda, Melissa, Audrey, Laura, Ryan and Anna; 3 great granddaughters: Jenna, Akeena and Alyssa.

The family would like to say a special thank you to mom's home caregiver, Penny, who took excellent care of her. Another thank you to the wonderful staff at the Durand Senior Care Center for all the special care you provided. Also, thank you to the caregivers and volunteers from Gentiva Hospice. You provide a very special service and we are so grateful to you.

SUE ANN SHEPHERD, age 76 of Durand, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso. Sue was born May 17, 1937 in Flint, Michigan, a daughter of Albert and Laura (Johnson) Boyce. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing bingo, cooking and fequenting garage sales.

ALFRED LEROY LIBBY, age 68, of Swartz Creek, died October 10, 2013 at his residence. Al was born July 1, 1945 in Durand, the son of Clarence and Ida Mae (Gilmore) Libby. He resided in Swartz Creek for 50 years. He worked for General Motors Buick division from 1962 - 2009, of which 13 years was hourly and then for 29 years he was supervisor of the engine plant. In 2005 Al opened his own business in downtown Durand, IMN Antiques, which he operated until the present time. He was an active member of the Durand Chamber of Commerce, where he served as Councilman, Vice President, and in March of this year received the honor of President. He received the Business Person of the Year Award by the City of Durand in March of this year. He enjoyed yard sales, going to casinos, spending time with grandchildren and taking small trips around Michigan and elsewhere. He enjoyed time spent with everyone he encountered, sharing stories and laughs. Al loved nature, fishing, taking rides on country roads and hickory nut picking. He especially enjoyed life and was always positive and will be remembered for his love to make people laugh He loved his bulldog, Burban.

Al is survived by his children, daughter Kimberly (Libby) and husband Steve Kelly of Owosso, two step-sons who he raised, Jeffery Janes of Durand, Michael Janes of Swartz Creek; and their mother Rose (Oxley) Libby of Swartz Creek; grandchildren, twins Hannah and Jonah, Madison, Melody and Taylor; 2 brothers, Norm Libby and Melvin Libby, both of Durand; sister, Joan Libby of Florida; several special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

RICHARD ARNOLD ANDERSON SR., longtime business owner and community leader in Durand, died Monday morning at age 83 at Memorial Hospital in Owosso.

A funeral service will be held at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Durand on Thursday, September 26th at 4 pm. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8. Family will also receive visitors from 3-4 on Thursday.

Graduates of Austin High School in Minnesota, Richard and his wife, Leatrice, married on June 12, 1949. He managed Woolworth Department stores in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin for over 20 years. The Anderson family moved to Michigan in 1969 and have owned the Ben Franklin store in downtown Durand for 44 years. His friends and customers appreciated him as a kind man with a terrific sense of humor.

Richard loved history, radio, newspapers, and airplanes. He and his wife traveled extensively and were regular theatre goers for decades. His community leadership included treasurer for the Durand Chamber of Commerce, officer for the Downtown Development Authority, and Durand Rotary member for over 40 years. He was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow Rotarian and as Durand's Citizen of the Year. Richard was a member of the First Congregational Church of Durand.

He is survived by, Leatrice, his wife of 64 years, and four children: Richard (Paula) Anderson Jr., Susan Swantek, John (Genise) Anderson, and Jean (Lloyd) Lockwood; ten grandchildren; three honorary granddaughters; and ten great grandchildren. He is also survived by brother Lewis (Mary) Anderson Jr., sister Margret Anderson, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Lewis and Martha Anderson and his son James Anderson.

Mr. Anderson will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and employees.

Sharon was born January 25, 1944 in Harrisville, MI a daughter of the late Lloyd and Vera (Yakes) Rivers. She attended Alcona Area High School, graduating in 1962.

Sharon was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3851 in Durand and was the secretary for the Eagle Riders. She enjoyed collecting antiques, camping and gardening.

MARGERY "IRENE" PERRY, age 86 of Durand, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Genesys Health Park.

Irene was born on August 31, 1927 in Montcalm County , the daughter of Loyal and Ethel(Dale) Eggelston. Irene was a homemaker and farmers wife and worked for a short time at Simplicity Engineering. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, enjoyed quilting, working elections and taught upholstery at Adult Education at Durand High School. On August 20, 1949 she married Ward H. Perry and he predeceased her in 2007.

ROMAINE MARIE BLOUNT, age 78 of Durand, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso. Per her wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no services at this time.

Romaine was born June 17, 1935, the daughter of the late Donald and Marie (Perry) Benear. She attended Durand High School, graduating in 1953.

On June 27, 1953, Romaine married Frank Blount in Corunna and together raised 4 children.

Mrs. Blount enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and crafts.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Frank; 4 children: Michael D. (Beth) Blount of Durand, Debra K. (Jeremy) Vik of Vernon, Curtis E. (Teresa) Blount of Durand, Janine (E.J.) Anderson of Durand; 6 grandchildren: Mark, Jenni, Laura, Jared, Nicholas, Jessica; 4 great grandchildren: Ashton, Boston, Joshua, Kailey and brother, Richard Benear.

ELIZABETH ROSELLA WOOLPERT, age 85 of Durand, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at the Durand Senior Care and Rehab Center.

Elizabeth was born October 12, 1927 in Howell, daughter of the late Floyd and Cordilia (Dinkle) Weeks.

On June 20, 1959, she married Stewart E. Woolpert. Mrs. Woolpert was a Registered Nurse for many years at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, and spending time with family.

Mrs. Woolpert is survived by 3 children: Carol (Tim) Bluhm, Craig Laurie) Woolpert, John (Dena) Woolpert; 2 step-children: Jerry (Nancy) Woolpert, Connie (Norm) Koury; 7 grandchildren: Scott, Todd, Kevin, Clark, Jake, Kari, Kelsey; 6 great grandchildren and niece: Janet Chauvin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart, on December 9, 2012 and her sister, Lorna VanCamp.

Ben was a very chivalrous and respectful young man, especially toward ladies. He loved basketball and working on both cars and bikes. He enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together. He also enjoyed listening to music and building speakers.

FAY EUGENE WINTERS, age 92, of Durand, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2013 at the Durand Senior Care and Rehab Center. A military graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 26, 2013 at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Owosso. The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel on Sunday from 2-8 p.m.

Fay was born November 28, 1920 in Durand, the son of Fay and Geneva (Bennett) Winters, Sr. He joined the United States Army in August of 1942 and served his country faithfully during World War II. While in the army, Fay held the rank of Platoon Sergeant in the Yankee Division 26th Infantry and fought in 4 battles, including the Battle of Bulge where he received the Bronze Star. Fay was honorably discharged from the army in October of 1945.

While in the army, Fay married Delta "Maxine" Tyler on May 24, 1943. Mr. Winters held many different jobs over the years, one of which was being an Engineer for Simplicity in Durand for over 40 years. He was a life member of the Durand VFW Reed-Raymond Post 2272 where he was a past commander. He was also a volunteer with the Durand Fire Department for 20 years. Fay enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling and watching his grandchildren participate in sports and band.

Mr. Winters is survived by his daughter, Denise (Gregory) Warren of Durand; 2 grandchildren: Brian (Amanda) Schneck and Natalie Warren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, in 2010; infant twin daughters and sister, Dorothea Winters.

He was welcomed home by his parents; his brothers Glen and Stuart; his sisters Thelma Jean and Christine; his sons Gary and Joe; daughter Teresa; and mother of his children Goldie. Moose touched a lot of lives, whether it was through his 28+ gallons of blood donated to the American Red Cross, his expertise as a Bingo caller extraordinaire, his time with Boy Scouts, at the Durand Senior Center, or more than 50 years of service with the Lions, Leos and Lioness clubs. Left to water the rhubarb are his darlin' wife Kelly, daughter Sherry Morse of Fenton, daughter Denise (Tracy) Temple of Bancroft, daughter Aleta (Carl) Cozart of Bancroft, step-daughter Torrey (Josh) of Corunna, and step-son Nick (Whitney) of Owosso. He was a member of the Michigan Outboard Association and the Michigan Trappers Association. As per Lynn's request his body was donated to the University of Michigan.

CAROL J. (LEEDLE) TURNER, age 72; of Houghton Lake passed away on Thursday July 4, 2013 at Munson Medical Center with her family by her side.

Carol was born on July 28, 1940 in Durand, Michigan; to Robert & Isabel (Toomey) Leedle. She married Gary Turner on November 12, 1960 in Corunna, Michigan. The couple moved to Houghton Lake in 1985. Carol enjoyed bowling, playing pool and playing euchre. She was a member of the Houghton Lake Eagles.

Audrey was born April 10, 1938 in Durand, a daughter of Vincent and Clara (Crandell) Duncan. She attended Corunna High School, graduating with the class of 1956. Before her retirement, Audrey was Head Cook for many years at Doyle Knight Elementary School. She had also been an instructor in cake decorating and had a side business making graduation and wedding cakes. Audrey enjoyed reading, bingo and playing cards, Scrabble and other games with her family.

She is survived by 2 daughters: Jeanette (Bert) Socia of Durand, Jeannine Maudlin of Dorr; 6 grandchildren: Mitchell, Mallory, Monica, Hannah, Alexandra and Douglas; 3 great grandchildren; 2 sisters; Carol (Dewey) Conrad of Durand, Wanda (Roger) Voorhies of Bancroft and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Julie Rene (Maudlin) Morse in 1994; brother, LaVerne C. Duncan and infant sister, Janet.

SHARON RAE REARICK, Sharon Rearick, 60, of Durand passed away at her home Monday, June 10, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 14, 2013 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Pastor John Walworth will be officiating with final rest in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Owosso. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6-8 p.m.

Sharon was born in Owosso Michigan on March 4, 1953. She graduated from Durand High School and attended Baker College. After graduating, she went on to work as Office Manager at the Social Security Administration Office of Hearings and Appeals. She later decided to pursue a degree in Social Work at Syracuse University and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1987. She continued her education and received a MSW at Syracuse in May 1989. She was the recipient of the 1989 Graduate School Master’s Prize in Social Work. She worked as a clinical social worker in Syracuse until 1994, before moving back to Michigan to be closer to family. She worked as a clinical supervisor for Shiawassee County Medical Care Facility, Supervisor at the Stress unit at Memorial Healthcare, Clinical Specialist/Lead ACT staff and returned to work at the Shiawassee County Community Health Authority. She had worked as a psychiatric social worker in outpatient and inpatient settings, including home-based service for almost 20 years.

She enjoyed reading, warm Florida winters, being a devoted Aunt to her niece, her cat nugget, and spending time with family and friends.

Her brother Douglas and sister-in-law Carol of Brighton, niece Katie of Mackinac Island, Aunt Martha Binger of Flint and numerous cousins, survive her. Her father Paul, mother Bonnie, and stepmother Patti preceded her in death. She passed away from complications from a long battle with Crohn’s disease.

AVIS B. COON, age 71 of Zephyrhills, FL, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013. She was born July 22, 1941 in Lennon. Avis graduated from Montrose High School, was of the Methodist faith, the former president of the Tourist Club, and enjoyed catering for local parks.

She is survived by her husband, Dewey Coon of Zephyrhills; son, Michael (Kathy) Coon of Fargo, ND; 2 grandchildren: Candace of Burton and Jonathon of Anchorage, AK.

GERTRUDE A GODLEY, Gertrude A. Godley, age 86 of Durand, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Gentiva Hospice in Flint. Gertrude was born October 24, 1926 in the McCaslin Lake family farm house in Argentine, daughter of William and Nina (Spaulding) McCaslin. She attended Byron High School, graduating in 1945. That same year she married Stanley G. Godley in Owosso on December 31st. Together they raised 2 children. Mr. Godley died October 6, 1999.

Mrs. Godley began her working career with Auto Light in Owosso and later with Victory Machine in Durand. She retired from Victory Machine as a Secretary in 1976.

Mrs. Godley is survived by her 2 children: Stanley (Janet) Godley of Swartz Creek, Sheryl (Monroe) Dye of Durand; 6 grandchildren: Barbara Wiseley, Brenda (Jim) Austin, Gregory (Marcia) Godley, LaCinda (Luke) Krause, Gerrad Godley, Monica Meister; great grandchildren: Andrew, Justin, Rose, Rachel, Joshua, Krista, Kayleigh, Kyle, Chaz, Lauren, Levi, Kiara, Devin; sister, Mary Bartlett of Owosso and many nieces and nephews. HELEN ELIZABETH DALLAS, age 98 of Durand passed away Thursday, May 30, 2013 peacefully at home.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 1, 2013 with pastor Goodman Cox officiating at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home of Durand. Burial will follow to Greenwood Cemetery in Vernon. Family will receive friends from 4-8 PM on Friday, May 31, also at the funeral home.

She was born Helen Elizabeth Shenk on October 20, 1914 in Kankakee, IL a daughter of Donald and Emma (Nelson) Shenk. On May 20, 1940 she married Joseph Dallas. He preceded her in death in 1999. Helen was a member of the Order of Eastern Stars. She loved cooking, gardening, flowers, sewing, crafting, bowling and most of all crossword puzzles. Prior to her retirement in 1975, she had been employed by Shenk Gravel as secretary and treasurer for many years. She also worked for Leasure Lake for some time.

Helen is survived by her son, James Dallas; grandchildren, Jeffrey Dallas and Jamie Russell; and sister, Josephine Fries. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; both parents; Donald and Emma; and brothers, Joseph Shenk and Donald Shenk Jr.

REVEREND SANDRA E. FERRIS, age 62, of Ypsilanti, died unexpectedly May 28, 2013. She passed peacefully in her sleep. Per Sandy's wishes, cremation has taken place. She requested that we wear bright colors with joy to celebrate her eternal life.

A Life Celebration will be held Thursday, June 27, at Detroit World Outreach, 23800 W. Chicago, Redford, MI, 48239. At 12 noon we gather to visit as we remember Sandy; lunch will be provided. Memorial service begins at 2pm followed by graveside service at  Arborcrest Memorial Garden, 2521 Glazier Way, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. 

Sandy was the daughter of Leonard P. Ferris and Darleen A. (Odykirk) Ferris.   She was born in Fitchburg, MA on August 31, 1950. 

Sandy graduated from Flushing High School in 1968. She attended Mott Community College, University of Michigan and earned her BA from Regents College in NY.  She attended seminary at Candler School of Theology at Emory University.

Her career spanned many years in Michigan and Georgia. Her most recent position was at the U-M Law School. Other work included Dental Assistant in Flushing, WJRT Channel 12 News, Flint, several Lutheran Church offices in the Flint area; and Canon USA, Best Foods, Gwinnett Hospital  System, Flowery Branch United Methodist Church in the Atlanta area. Sandy was diagnosed with diabetes at 21 and volunteered at the American Diabetes Association-Flint.

For many years, Sandy was active in her ministry through DWO in His Hospitality and Fairlane Senior Center ministry, leading Bible study groups in the Ann Arbor area. She served as an area coordinator for the Association of Evangelical Gospel Assemblies. Sandy attended and served at Light of Faith Fellowship, Durand, MI for several years also. 

Survivors include father, Leonard (Terry), NV, brother, Lenny (Cindy),OR, sister, Lorrie Buckel (Rod),MI, sister, Judy, TX, nieces, nephews, other relatives. Sandy's mother, Darleen, preceded her in death March 2012.

Special recognition and gratitude for dear friends Barbara Gomez and Cindy DeHart.

EDWARD JOSEPH ARVOY, age 84 of Durand, MI passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013 at McLaren Health Care of Flint.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Durand with Rev. Fr. Jeffrey Poll officiating. Burial to follow at St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery in Owosso. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 21, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes and on Wednesday at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of the Mass.

Edward was born August 27, 1928 in Durand, MI a son of Joseph and Mary (Drenovsky) Arvoy. On September 5,1959 he married Georgia M. Hughes. She preceded him in death in 1995. Edward was an avid sports fan and he loved the Detroit Tigers. Prior to his retirement he had been employed by the Grand Trunk Railroad for many years.

Edward is survived by his children, Mary Arvoy, Gregory Arvoy, Michael (Danette) Arvoy, William (Michelle) Arvoy, Stephen (Tracey) Arvoy and Donald Arvoy; and grandchildren, Jordan, Madison, Courtney and Brielle. He was preceded in death by both parents; and brothers, Joe, Bob and Tom.

MARY LULU EDWARDS (RICHARDSON), 78, of Durand, passed peacefully on May 10, 2013. Mary was born on May 22, 1934 to the late Howard & Eva Richardson. A Byron High School graduate, she married Robert B. Edwards, Sr. of Durand on July 19, 1952. Mary and Bob enjoyed camping and were very involved in the National Campers and Hikers Association where they served as NCHA Michigan State Field Directors. Mary was a homemaker at heart but also worked for the Secretary of State's Office, served as a local Girl Scout leader and donated her time as a community volunteer.

She was preceded in death by Bob, her husband of 45 years, her brother Howard Richardson, her grandson Alexander Ryan Edwards and her son-in-law Timothy Doyle.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Deborah Doyle of Durand, her son, Robert B. Edwards, Jr. and wife Shirley, and her grandchildren, Taylor and Madison Edwards of Maryland. She is also survived by her brother and special caregiver, Theodore ("Teddy") Richardson and siblings, Faith Schotter, Catherine Nelson and Gerald Richardson and a large extended family.

MICHAEL GEORGE SLEESEMAN, age 61 of Durand, passed away on Thursday, May 9, 20013 at the Hospice House of Shiawassee County. Mike was born June 3, 1951 in Owosso, to the late Robert H. and Betty J. (Smith) Sleeseman. He was a 1970 graduate of Corunna High School and a resident of Durand all of his life.

On November 27, 1980, Mike married Glenda Ann Bass/Whitehurst in Dothan, Alabama. He worked for General Motors at the Flint Metal Fab Plant for 40 years.

Mr. Sleeseman is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ann; daughters: Rebecca (Dennis) Mizell of Morrice, Amanda (Jeremy) Grove of Swartz Creek; grandchildren: Gavin Grove and he was eagerly awaiting the birth of Rebecca and Dennis' twin boys due at the end of July; sisters: Nancy Richter of California, Bonnie Lou (Fred) Stanuszek of Flushing, Connie Sue (Dan) Gallagher of Corunna as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert "Bob" Sleeseman; brother-in-law, Jim Richter; sister-in-law, Cheryl Sleeseman.

ANTHONY "TONY" LYNN HARTLEY, age 62 of Durand, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at his home. Tony was born April 2, 1951 in Lansing, a son of the late Walter R. and Faye (Tippie) Hartley.

Prior to his retirement, Tony was a truck driver. He was a member of the Durand Eagles, was a Harley-Davidson enthusiast and enjoyed hanging out with his friends.

Mr. Hartley is survived by his daughter, Dayna (Matt Hutchison) Hartley of Corunna; grandson, Carsen Hutchison; sister, Norma Hicks of Dimondale; 2 brothers: Hank (Janet) Hartley of Grand Ledge, Richard "Butch" (Peggy) Hartley of Charlotte and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

DONALD (DON) B. ROGERS, age 74 of Bancroft, passed away on Friday May 3, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Don was born in Adrian, MI, the son of Buell & Marjorie(Roberts) Rogers. He served his country during the Korean War in the Army. On October 18, 1969 he married Ladean (Dee) Coon in Bancroft. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, was past commander & volunteer of the Durand DVA, was on the disaster team and taught classes. He also was a volunteer for the Red Cross. Don worked for Moore Iron as a welder and was a self-employed carpenter.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dee, daughter Dalyn (Rob) Belen of Lansing, Daughter Deona (Rob) Vorhies of Vernon, son Damon Rogers of Owosso, 4 grandchildren Arianna, Robert, Thomas and Donovan, brother Larry (Pat) Rogers of TX, adopted daughter Michelle Thornburg, special friends Charlie (Kim) Gordon of VA. ROBERT "BOB" WRIGHT, age 75 of Lennon, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2013 at his home. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a memorial celebration will be announced at a later date. Arrangements through Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.

Bob was born February 27, 1938 in Lansing, Michigan to Robert and Florence Cecilia (Pollender) Wright.

He married Karen Rose Weber in Corunna on August 14, 1980. Bob worked several years for the State of Michigan in the prison system as a Prison Guard for both the Ypsilanti and Jackson Prisons.

He enjoyed fishing in his earlier years, watching movies and spending time with his family.

Mr. Wright is survived by his wife of 32 years, Karen; 7 children: Rita, Jennifer, Robert, David, Joe, Amber and Florence; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Jana Case and Sharla Stokes as well as several nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brother, David.

EUGENE "GENE" RAY BROTHERS, age 69 of Durand, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2013 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Corunna, 1120 Legion Rd. Corunna, MI 48817.

Gene was born February 18, 1944 in Corunna to Jerome and Ethel (Ferris) Brothers. On April 7, 1973 he married Frieda Book in Vernon.

Gene was a Fabricator for many years. He was a Ford man, he enjoyed his trucks and being outside mowing the lawn.

Mr. Brothers is survived by his wife of 40 years, Frieda; 5 children: Jeri (Richard) Ryan of Owosso, Scott Brothers of Gladwin, Lori Brothers of Howell, Mike Brothers of Corunna, Eugene Brothers of Durand; 13 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; brother, Bill and sister, Betty.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-daughter, Chervelia "Sam" McConnaghhay; brothers: Robert, Charlie, Richard and sister, JoAnn Engdahl.

JANET LOUISE RICHARDS, age 66 of Durand, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso. Janet was born December 27, 1946, daughter of Wil and Ruth (Williams) Richards. She attended Byron High School, graduating in 1965.

Janet was a member of the Durand VFW Ladies' Auxiliary and had attended Gilead Baptist Church in Owosso. Prior to her retirement, Janet worked in Housekeeping for the Durand Senior Care and Rehab Center. She liked to travel and loved being with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed photography, scrapbooking and the company of her dogs.

Janet is survived by her 3 children: Kevin (Renee) Kelly of Durand, Mary (Michael) Clapp of Owosso, Brian (Stacey) Kelly of Bancroft; 7 grandchildren: Melodie, Nick (Megan), Amanda and Ashten Kelly, Aaron Clapp, Max and Myah Kelly; 4 great grandchildren: Chloe, Lani, James and Owen; mother, Ruth; sister, Sharon (Ray) Blair of Bancroft and brother, Ron (Cheryl) Richards of Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wil.

SELMA ARLENE PHILLIPS, age 95 of Durand, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at her home.

Arlene was born on May 26, 1917 in Durand, Michigan, the daughter of Carl and Edith(Husted) Huff. She married Charles (Ed) Phillips in Durand on June 24, 1944 and together raised 2 children. Always active, when she was younger Arlene enjoyed baking, sewing and knitting.

Arlene is survived by her son, Dennis(Bonnie) Phillips of Durand, MI; daughter, Darlene Trevillian of Swartz Creek; 2 grandchildren: Nicholas Phillips of Battle Creek; and Courtney (D.R.) Long of Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania; 3 great grandchildren: Lindsay Lajoie, Noah Long and Chloe Long.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, and her sister Margaret Shelly.

RONALD GARTH MORRIS, age 90 of Durand, MI passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Linda's Place in Linden. He was born October 1, 1922 in Detroit, MI a son of Wayne and Thelma (Kibby) Morris.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel with Pastor John Walworth officiating. Family will recieve friends on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM also at the funeral home.

On May 27, 1950 he was married to Marilyn Miller. She preceded him in death on June 10, 2009. Ronald was a member of the Durand Chamber of Commerce and the Durand V.F.W. He loved bowling and playing cards with his friends and family. Prior to his retirement in 1977, he was the owner of Morris T.V. Sales and Service.

Surviving Ronald are his children, Steve (Janet) Morris and David (Lisa) Morris; grandchildren, Jessica (Mat) Benjamin, Matthew (Crystal Vasicek) Morris, Melissa (Dante) Borio and Angela (Joshua) Pump; great grandchildren, Bella and Uriah Benjamin, Moxie Borio and baby Borio and baby Morris on the way; and sisters, Paula Burean and Sherry (Ralph)Langdon. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; sisters, Betty and Nona and brother, Richard.

DOROTHY ELEANOR MATUSCAK, age 87 of Durand, passed away Wednesday morning, April 3, 2013 at her home. Dorothy was born March 23, 1926 in St. Clair, MI daughter of the late Ralph and Marion (Dudd) Ulrich. In August of 1946, Dorothy married Peter F. Matuscak and together raised 2 sons. Peter later died in 1999.

Mrs. Matuscak worked for Chrysler for 30 years, retiring from the Dodge Main Plant in Hamtramck in 1977. Dorothy was a member of the NAIC and a past member of Saints Peter and Paul Church in Detroit. She enjoyed her time at casinos.

Mrs. Matuscak is survived by 1 son, James (Leila) Matuscak of Durand; 4 grandchildren: Matthew (Dawn) Matuscak, Melissa (Scott Uren) Matuscak, Jessica (Mark) Rambaldo, Jason (Diana) Matuscak; 6 great grandchildren, 4 brothers, 3 sisters and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband, Peter; son, Paul in 1996 as well as 6 brothers and sisters.

ANN DARLENE KOCH, age 70 of Durand, passed away Tuesday morning, April 2, 2013 at the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, Lansing. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 8, 2013 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Pastor Ed Chandler will be officiating with burial to follow in Maple River Cemetery, Shiawassee Township. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-5 p.m.

Ann was born September 24, 1942 to Burt and Florentina (Winter) Gillies of West Branch. She is the wife of George "Ed" Koch.

Mrs. Koch is survived by her husband, Ed; sister, Janey (Roger) Winslow of Midland; sons: Todd (Tina) Hasty of Durand, Tom Hasty of Houghton Lake and Tyler (Michelle) Hasty of Virginia; step-daughters: Cindy Kingsbury of Durand, Lori (Darren) Leck of Lennon, Dana (George) Fuller of Durand and Kelly (Mike) McDonald of Vernon. She is also survived by her many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.
