It is widely acknowledged that many families rely on the meals students receive while at school, and otherwise might be forced to miss meals.

While students are out of school, the state has made possible a free meal program that, today, Durand schools Superintendent, Craig McCrumb, said is being underutilized.

The program is open to anyone 18 years old or younger.

McCrumb said the box lunches provided typically include items such as cheese sticks, yogurt, both milk and juice, along with snack items such as Keebler “Elf Grahams.”

Durand schools food service staff has a van set up at three locations each weekday.  McCrumb said just "drive up, roll down your window, let them know how many boxes you'll need (kids don't have to be present), and you'll be handed stackable plastic lunch boxes."

The mobile food service locations and times are:

>Veterans Memorial Park, Bancroft: 11:00-11:30am

>Optimist Park, 102 East Fauble St., Durand: 11:45-12:15am

>Old Doyle Knight Elementary, 900 Oak St., Lennon: 12:30-1:00pm

McCrumb encourages families to consider taking advantage of this free meal.

Meals will not be provided during the originally scheduled spring break, March 30th through April 3rd.

On a related note, Mr. McCrumb said that there is little new information regarding the current state-mandated break from school in response to the Coronavirus, and whether or not students will return as planned in early April, or if the break will be extended.

He said as decisions are made, the district will send communications to keep everyone in the loop.
