A Sunday afternoon fire in downtown Vernon damaged Vernon Insurance Agency and destroyed the adjoining building.  While damage to the insurance agency appeared to be minimal and authorities are hopeful the scope is limited enough that the building will not need to be torn down, we're told an excavator has already been called in to raze the neighboring building where the fire occurred.

Departments from across the county came to help fight the fire; Laingsburg, Owosso, Corunna, Perry, Shiawassee Township, Durand -- even Swartz Creek assisted the Vernon Township Fire Department.

The extra help was particularly necessary as there are no fire hydrants so fighting a fire in downtown Vernon means water supplies rely on tanker trucks.

It's unclear what the building was used for except for a residence.  There were no injuries.
