D-Railed, Jan Harper, 100+ Women and Martin Brothers To Be Honored Thursday

Greater Durand Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner at Durand VFW Will Honor Recently Announced Award Winners

The Greater Durand Area Chamber of Commerce Inc is proud to announce that D-Railed Bar and Grill is the recipient of the 2019 Business of the Year Award.  D-Railed was selected for their commitment to raising funds for Toys For Tots, their dedication to sponsoring fundraisers for and donating to community activities. D-Railed has raised thousands of dollars for families who are facing a health crisis by hosting Spaghetti Dinners and silent auctions. D-Railed was purchased in 2013 by Bernie Friend, Bob Patsey and Larry Webb. The Chamber congratulates the owners and staff on being named Business of the Year and on their continued commitment to the community.

The Greater Durand Area Chamber of Commerce is also pleased to announce that Durand resident, Jan Harper (pictured above), has been selected as the 2019 Citizen of the Year.
 
 Harper, a graduate of Owosso High School, moved to Durand in 1965 . She began her teaching career at Durand Area High School the same year. Harper was the art teacher for 30 years and one of the founders of “Conglomeration” an art and writing showcase magazine for Durand students. She has been a member of the Durand School Board, and worked at the state level for the MEA . Harper founded the Durand Educational Foundation in 2013. She currently serves as the chairperson. Harper served as the facility coordinator for Durand Union Station. A lifetime member of the Memorial Health Care Auxiliary, she served as the Durand representative on the Memorial Health Care Board of Trustees from 2005-2017. Mrs Harper is currently the Queen Bee of the Choo Choo Chicks. 

The Greater Durand Area Chamber of Commerce Inc. has chosen 100+ Women Who Care as the Organization Of The Year. The group was founded in 2016 by Shari Demo, Leslie Dietrich, Kasey Fibernitz, Linda Greeson, Debbie Lintz, Karla Luchenbill, and Kathy Wilson. The purpose of the group is to support local not-for-profits by making donations directly to the organization. The 100 Women Who Care has over 120 members who meet in March and September. Members may nominate any not-for-profit. Three names are randomly selected to present. Each presenter will discuss their organizations needs and how the group, if chosen, will use the funds. Since 2016 over $57,000 has been awarded to local organizations.

The Greater Durand Area Chamber of Commerce Inc will also honor Dennis Martin and Greg Martin as the Volunteers of the Year.

Dennis, Viet Nam Vet is the former commander of the Reed Raymond VFW post. He has been active in numerous civic and veterans’ affairs. He has donated many years to the Annual Chicken BBQ, to the Chamber events, and to the City of Durand. He is active in the summer concerts presented by the Veterans of Rock.

Greg is the owner of Jim’s Pizza in Durand. Through his business, Greg donates time and product to various causes. He is a co-founder of the Veterans of Rock Concerts that has raised over $85,000 for local projects. Greg has served on the Wednesday Night Live Committee, has helped with the weekly car cruises, and various other causes.

All award winners will be recognized at the Greater Durand Chamber of Commerce Dinner on Thursday evening, April 18th.  For reservations call 989.288.3715.
