With nine more weeks remaining in the 2017 market season, local produce is now taking center stage with fresh baked goods and other specialty items in a supporting role at the Durand Farmers’ Market & Crafts.

Michigan apple growers are reporting Michigan’s apple harvest is ahead of schedule this year.  Some varieties could have peak harvest dates a full week before usual.

The official mascot of the “shop local” campaign created by the Michigan Retailers Association, Buy Nearby Guy, made a quick visit to pose for pictures and leave coloring books and “I Did Buy Nearby” stickers for the visitors and vendors.

Durand residents Dale Mulnix, Born’s Corn (Dean Jones) and Florida/Durand’s Ken LePage were all recent winners of Durand Union Station’s weekly 50/50 drawing while Johnny Brewer was the third Green$$$ winner.  Two more winners of the $20 in market certificates will be announced on August 23rd.

Wyndham Lathem, pictured left, and Andrew Warren, right, are in custody in California after a nationwide hunt for the men began with the discovery of a body in Lathem's Chicago high-rise apartment.  The body was that of Trenton Cornell-Duranleau, 26, formerly of Lennon and Corunna.

Few details are available except that the alleged murder of Cornell-Duranleau was gruesome, and that one of the men told his family via video that he had made the worst mistake of his life.
