Sunday October 27th has been a bit of a whirlwind for the Durand football program.  The Railroaders varsity football team is headed to the playoffs -- the result of a coin flip; the first-ever in MHSAA playoff history.

Durand Athletic Director Bryan Carpenter and Football Coach Rick Winbigler found out via video conference on Sunday morning that the team was in.  We interrupted Carpenter while he was taking care of some serious business on Sunday afternoon -- trick-or-treating with the family -- to talk about what brought the program to this point, playoff prep and the program's playoff history.  At the time of our discussion, it was still unknown who the team would battle in the first round.  The Selection Show which aired Sunday evening revealed the team pairings.

The phone call audio is posted as a podcast and we added a post-Selection Show update as well.  Who will the Railroaders play?  What other Shiawassee County team is playoff-bound?   Listen to find out the answers to both of those questions, plus more -- like what year it was the last time Durand went to the playoffs, and who the coach of that team was!

Shiawassee Radio Episode 13: When It's A Tie at the Railroad Crossing...

There's an old saying: When it's a tie at the railroad crossing... you lose. The Railroaders are headed to the football playoffs for the first time since 2009. The team gains entry after tying Imlay City to the thousandth decimal place in scoring, including tie-breakers. So, for the first time in MHSAA history, it came down to a coin toss. Josh Strickland talks to Durand Athletic Director, Bryan Carpenter, about what brought the team here, playoff prep and program history.
