Museum staff at the Michigan Railroad History Museum in Durand has been hard at work redesigning displays, creating new exhibits, and bringing more of railroading’s past to the community for Railroad Days Weekend and beyond.
The two largest displays are refreshed exhibits of presidential whistle stops and military use of railroads. The presidential whistle stop display, generously sponsored by the North Newburg Masons 161, discusses in greater detail whistle stop trips from Presidents Eisenhower, Truman, Nixon, Ford, Clinton and Bush.
The military history case includes the American Civil War, World War I and World War II, and shows how the rails influenced tactics and military strategy. Research for this display was done by Durand High School students Cameron Counterman and Maria Perez. Items on display in the case are loaned by Robert and Grace Ann Swanson. The exhibit is funded by the Durand VFW Post 2272 Men’s Auxiliary.
Smaller exhibits include a display of antique pistols used by railroad employees during the late 1800s, a map exhibit showing the growth of a railroad town through the lens of Durand’s own history (researched by Mallory Lucas), and a working telegraph machine that will be available for hands-on use in the depot.
Over at the caboose during the weekend’s festivities, the museum will expand its historical offerings to a pair of uniformed mannequins, one dressed as a conductor, and one dressed in an authentic Grand Trunk Western baseball uniform. Volunteers and retired railroad employees will be on site all weekend long in the caboose to talk about the history of the railroad and its workers.
The museum inside Durand Union Station will be open during Railroad Days weekend from 1-5 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday.
