NOMINATIONS FOR RAILROAD PERSON OF THE YEAR BEING ACCEPTED NOW
Ceremony Has Honored Past and Present Railroad Employees Since 1977
Richard Craven is honored as the 2015 Railroad Person of the Year at a ceremony in the Durand Union Station Ballroom
The 2016 Railroad Person of the Year nomination forms are now available at the Durand City Hall, Durand Union Station, and the Durand Memorial Branch of the Shiawassee District Library in Durand and Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso. The forms are also available to download by clicking here or at the website, durandstation.org.
All nominations are due no later than March 4, 2016 for consideration by a review committee in selecting the person for this year’s award. To be nominated, a person (male or female) must be working or have worked for a railroad company from the surrounding Durand area
The Selection Committee is made up of mostly past Railroad Persons of the Year honorees.
The Railroad Person of the Year is sponsored by Durand Union Station Inc., in conjunction with the Durand Railroad Days Festival to be held on May 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th.
At Durand Union Station, Friday evening, May 13th, there will be an Honoring Ceremony for the person selected. On May 14th, the Railroad Person of the Year will ride in the Railroad Days Parade. Later that same day, there will be a reception in the Ballroom of the Union Station for the family and friends of the honoree.
The tradition of Railroad Person of the Year began in 1977 with Glenn Wille receiving the first award. Each year since, a man or woman who has been in railroad employment has been honored. Last year’s honoree was Richard Craven, a retired locomotive engineer from Grand Trunk/CN Railroad.
