He's a beloved part of Durand memories.  'Officer Rich' was, for many years, the city's D.A.R.E. officer, visiting classrooms and speaking with students; making friends and earning respect.

He worked every shift an officer could, even patrolling late at night and early in the morning.  He was, for a time, the city's Chief.

He was the type of public face most departments could only hope to have.

After decades with the city's police department, he departed in 2016, stepping into the role as Chief of the Lennon Police Department.  But he didn't stop serving the people of Durand.

Folaron was elected to another term as a city councilman just weeks ago.  While he'll continue to represent residents in the city of Durand, Folaron announced that he is stepping down as Chief of the Lennon Police Department.

"The time has come," Officer Rich told Durand Now on Thursday.

"I turned 66 years old, and I need to get off the road. I have been in law enforcement for 45 years, I have seen a lot, done a lot. The majority of my career has been fun."

Though Folaron is leaving his post in Lennon, he's not exactly retiring.  He will continue his career, he said, working with Shiawassee County Sheriff Brian BeGole, serving as a Deputy at the courts.

Folaron said of BeGole, "Shiawassee County has a gem."

In a message posted to Facebook, he thanked village council members and residents for the honor of serving Lennon.

Among the dozens of well-wishes in response were messages from residents, village and city officials and, of course, former D.A.R.E. students.
