In 1994, the Durand Eagles Aerie #3851 assumed the responsibility for coordinating the Old Newsboys Program for Shiawassee County.  With the participation of other area service clubs, the Old Newsboys provides Christmas packages for children of Shiawassee County families in need of assistance.

Some families come directly to the Eagles for their applications but most are processed through the Capital Area Community Services (CACS) in Owosso.  CACS not only determines their need, but also identifies other service organizations that can help each family.

The Old Newsboys "Christmas Boxes" packages have always been about clothing and personal needs and include a sweatsuit, two pairs of socks and underwear, a warm winter hat, gloves/mittens, a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss and an age-appropriate gift.

The organization serves children from newborn through high school.  The packages are purchased and prepared through the Flint Old Newsboys.

In 2018 The Old Newsboys of Shiawassee County provided 272 area children with packages. This year the total will be over 400.

One of the ways The Old Newsboys of Shiawassee County raises funds is with the sale of the annual newspaper.  The latest edition will be available this month.

On December 13th, volunteers will hit the streets of Durand, Vernon, Byron and Perry to conduct the annual paper drive.  They'll be stationed at ten different locations.

When you come by the Old Newsboys volunteers at an intersection near you, a donation of any amount will get you the paper.  A $20 donation sponsors a child and gets you the annual ONB button.

On December 14th, the Durand Eagles Aerie #3851 will host a lasagna dinner. Dinner will be served at 4:30pm at $8 per plate, and at 6:30pm a live auction will be held.

All funds earned through this program are dedicated for the Christmas Boxes and, when possible, events such as the ONB “Clothes for Kids” last August.

Thanks to the generosity of donors in 2018, unspent funds supported the Clothes for Kids event, where 40 children were invited to shop at Meijer for clothes on a selected day. Invitees were selected through a screening process at CACS and each received $150 to spend.

The Durand Eagles Aerie #3851 is located at 5240 New Lothrop Road.

Forget the drive thru, unless you're really taking that order "to go."
