It was standing room only in downtown Corunna's Surbeck Building where the Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners Committee of the Whole met on Wednesday evening. Sheriff Brian BeGole was there, joined by a number of the department's officers, to make an appeal for the chance to give residents a forum for input on the future of the Shiawassee County Jail.

Since becoming sheriff, BeGole has spoken extensively about the dire shape of the 50-plus year old facility. Now, he hopes Shiawassee County voters will have the chance to decide whether or not they want to fund the construction of a new jail; one BeGole and department staff agree is needed.

A majority of the commissioners present voted favorably to take up the issue at the Board of Commissioners Thursday meeting; a final vote, BeGole said, before the initiative to get a millage for a new jail on the ballot is decided.

Commissioners Webster, Horvath, Marks, Garber and Plowman voted yes. Holzhausen voted no. Root was absent.

In a post-meeting text to Durand Now, BeGole said "1 more vote." If a majority again affirms the project in Thursday's vote, it will soon appear on the ballot for Shiawassee County residents to weigh in.
