UPDATE: The Winter Storm Watch has now been upgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory, in effect from 1am Tuesday February 12th to 3pm Wednesday February 13th.

-

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Shiawassee and Genesee County.  Snow, ice and wind are all potential factors with the system, but if we're taking a hyper-local look at what we should expect in the Durand area, here's what brand new data is showing right now:

Expect 4 inches of snow by Tuesday morning.  By Wednesday morning, look for an additional two inches of snow accumulation. The western edge of Shiawassee County could see even more snow; as much as 7 inches total accumulation by Wednesday morning.

The I-69 corridor is basically the line that's being drawn between a snow-only event and a "wintry mix;" the combination of snow, freezing rain and ice accumulation.  North of 69, the snow accumulations increase dramatically.  South of 69, less snow is expected, but that doesn't diminish the impact of this storm.  In fact, some might argue the impact will be greater.

The further south we look, the greater likelihood of ice accumulation.  That, of course, can bring its own set of problems.

But exactly how much ice are we looking at in Durand?

As of right now, punching in the exact latitude and longitude coordinates of downtown Durand, the GFS (American) model prediction is that we will see around .02 inches of ice.  That's right.  Not even a tenth of an inch.  It looks the same for Lennon.

But don't expect it on Tuesday, because this appears to be strictly a snow event for us until late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.  The aforementioned ice accumulation numbers are for Wednesday morning.

Bancroft is predicted to get slightly more; .03 inches of accumulation by Wednesday morning.  The same for Byron.

So, right now, this does appear to be more of a snow event for the Durand area rather than a wintry mix, especially on Tuesday.

And then there's the wind, which is expected to complicate things.

With all that being said, the shift of a degree or two could change how things play out for us because we're right on that dividing line between snow and wintry mix, so don't rule out more freezing rain. In the Detroit area, the forecast is calling for a quarter inch of ice on Tuesday.

We'll be looking closely at updated forecast models and will alert of you of any notable changes.  As always, we'll let you know about school closings or delays and potential traffic issues as well.  It's all still free on DurandNow.com.
