Arthur T. Lewis age 87 of Bancroft passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the Durand Senior Care and Rehab Center. There are no services at this time. Cremation has taken place. Thomas Anthony Cameron, 71 of Durand, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.  A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 16, 2017 at 2:00 PM at St. Mary Catholic Church in Durand.  The Rev. Fr. Bill Lugger will officiate with burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Gaines.  The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Durand on Thursday from 12 noon until 9:00 PM and Friday at the church from noon until the time of service.

Thomas was born in Gladwin, MI on June 20, 1945, the son of Alexander & Vera (Tenwalde) Cameron.  For the past 50 years he has resided in Durand.  On September 25, 1965 he married Beverly Jane Heffner in Gladwin, MI.  He enjoyed hunting, gardening and the farm.  Mr. Cameron worked for 35 years for General Motors Truck and Bus in Flint before retiring in 2000.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Beverly, 3 children; Brent (Holly) Cameron of Durand, Angie (Larry) Patsey of Lansing, and Chad Cameron of Durand, 11 grandchildren; Jordan (Jordin), Cassy, Lindsay, Darrin, Jr., Madalyn, Jessi, Alex, Eric, Isabel, Corinn, and Fawn, great granddaughter Asher and a great granddaughter due in August,  his brother Larry (Louise) Cameron of Standish, sisters Jean Hickerson of Gaylord, Patricia Haring of Clare and Susan Lang of Beaverton, brother-law Lyle (Deb) McLincha of Bentley, sisters-in-law Dorothy Cameron of Coleman, Joyce Cameron,  Joanne Cameron, both of Gladwin, several nieces,  nephews and daughter-in-law Kelli Brant.  He was predeceased by his son, Darrin in 1995, three infant siblings: Robert, Marilyn and Mildred Cameron; sisters Lucille Plude and Helen  Ballard, brother Paul Cameron, sister Agnes Oard, brother Ken Cameron, his twin sister Kathy McLincha, brothers Duane Cameron and Richard Cameron, sister Marcele R. Donald A. Thompson passed away peacefully in his home with his family and friends beside him on June 10, 2017 after a long battle from a massive stroke, Alzheimer's and dementia.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.  Family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 12:00 until the time of the service.  A private burial will be held in Great Lake National Cemetery at a later date.

Donald was born November 25, 1928 and married Betty Crumback on June 9, 1951.  They have been married for 66 wonderful years.  Donald was in the service twice, both times in the Army.  He was a Sergeant First Class and served during the Korean Conflict as a mechanic.

Donald was a life member of Rauch - Tower VFW Post 5822 of Byron.  He was a past Commander and held several offices in the VFW.  For many years Donald organized the Memorial Day Parade in Byron for the VFW before stepping down.  He was a positive influence for the community and was proud to serve the Byron area.

Donald was a local business owner, he opened Thompson's Rental, Resale, Repair in Byron 35 years ago after suffering the loss of his son William in a trucking accident.  Donald was a long haul truck driver before opening the small engine repair business and drove truck for over 25 years.

Donald leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Betty; sons: Dennis (Helen) Thompson, Jesse (Wendy) Thompson; daughters: Marilyn Thompson, Rose Thompson, Helen (Kurt) Roberts and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Donald was preceded in death by his father, Jesse; step-father, John; mother, Nola; and son, William.

Robert James Spangler, age 73 of Lennon passed away Sunday, June 4, 2017 after a very brief bout with throat cancer.
Bob was born on June 1, 1944 in Lansing the son of Clayton and Helen (Fifer) Spangler.  He attended the East Lansing Schools and served in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam War.  He married Judie McCormick on April 9, 1966 in Shaftsburg and they had two children Bobbie Jo and Ronald.

In the past he enjoyed many bowling and golf leagues.  He enjoyed playing cards and any board games and loved spending time with family and friends.  Bob was retired from Fisher Body in Lansing  after 30 1/2 years.

Bob is survived by his wife Judie, his Children Bobbie (Jeff) Gipson and Ronald Spangler, grandchildren, Justin (Courtney), Tanja (Dan), Cameron (Lisa) and Shawn, his great-grandchildren, Calliejo, Cayleejo, Chloejo, Karissa, step-grandchildren,Ashtin , Brandon, Kelsie and Chase, four sisters, two brothers, many nieces and nephews, family and friends.  He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers   As Bob wished he had been cremated and there will be no services.  Arrangments by Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Durand Chapel.  Online condolences can be made to www.watkinsfuneralhomes.com


Dale Duane Hill, 60, of Durand, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2017.  A memorial service will be held at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel, on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 11am.  The family will receive friends from 10am until the time of the service.  Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.


Ben O. Ordiway age 77 of Bancroft passed away Friday, May 26, 2017 at his home. A visitation will be held on Friday, June 2, 2017 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Love Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A burial of cremains will take place at a later date at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.

Ben was born September 13, 1939 in Durand, MI a son of Donald and Doris (Griswald) Ordiway. After graduating high school he served in the United States Navy from 1958-1964. On April 29, 1961 he married Joan Pirochta. Ben was a member of the United Methodist Church in Bancroft. He enjoyed fixing things in his workshop, restoring old tractors and cars, painting cars, gardening, helping people, and camping with his family and dog. Prior to his retirement he had worked as a Tool and Die Maker for many years.

Surviving Ben is his wife, Joan Ordiway; children, Paul Ordiway, Tod Ordiway and Joseph Ordiway; grandchildren, Stacey, Michael and Johnathan; sister, Dorene Gilbank; and brother, John Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Doris Ordiway; and adopted parents, Tink and Ester Davenport.

Barry A. Gilmore age 67 of Mt. Morris passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 17, 2017. There are no services at this time. Arrangements are being handled by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.

Barry was born September 21, 1949 in Flint, MI a son of Robert and Mary (Higby) Gilmore. He was a member of the Port Huron Moose Lodge. He enjoyed donating his time to children activities and programs. Prior to his retirement in 1999, he was employed by General Motors for 33 years.

Surviving Barry is his children, Shannon (Erik) Kaiser, Sandy (Joseph) Johnson, and Robert (Sheri) Gilmore; grandchildren, Justin, Kurstin, Brendan, Shelby, Kailee, Robert, and Dean; 5 great grandchildren; and girlfriend, Kathleen Adamski. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Mary.

Linda R. Kessinger age 69 of Durand passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017 surrounded by family. There are no services at this time. Arrangements are being handled by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes of Durand.

Linda was born September 15, 1947 in Grand Rapids, MI a daughter of Kenneth and Margaret (Kauffman) Holst. In 1965 she married Michael Kessinger. He preceded her in death. Linda was a member of the Durand Eagles and the Allegan Eagles. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and watching her grandchildren grow and play sports.

Linda is survived by her daughter, Wendy (Todd Sexton) Wurtz; grandchildren, Hunter, Remington (Breyanna Thayer) and Autumn; brothers, Ken (Marcia), Gary (Vicki) and Richard (Debbie); and sisters, Cheryl (Tom) and Kathy (Tom). She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael; both parents; and brother, Denny.

Allinda (Linda) F. Kessell of Henderson NV, formerly of Durand, MI, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on May 16, 2017. Her family was at her side.  She was born in West Virginia on October 7, 1940. She was raised by her grandparents, Franklin and Willie Dell Nelson until the age of 16, when she married the love of her life, Lewis Kessell on October 6, 1957.  Starting in the early 1970’s, Linda traveled and sang praises to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She had the privilege of signing for several years with The Southern Harmony Trio, The Echoes of Grace Trio and then started singing with her family, The Spirit of Song, then ending up with The Kessell Family.

October, 1990 found her and Lewis starting a new chapter in their lives when they moved to Henderson NV. There she continued singing with her daughter Debbie and working for the Lord. In 2002, Lewis and Linda moved from Henderson to Mesquite NV where they were active in the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) for over 6 years. Linda was chosen volunteer of the year for the City of Mesquite in 2005, with her plaque hanging in City hall today. She was instrumental in performing in the Mesquite Community Theater Christmas Program and the Mesquite Festival of Trees.

In 2004, she was chosen to deploy with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), working on hurricane relief in the southeast after the hurricane disaster that year. Along with her activity in the community, she spread the gospel by singing at churches in the area and at the nursing home in Mesquite.

In the mid 1970’s, Linda recorded a solo gospel album titled “I Call Him Lord”, and then she recorded two gospel CD’s, “I Think of Calvary” and “Mercy Walked In” and tribute CD “Just To Be A Blessing”, in honor of good friend Esther Kennedy with her daughters, Diane and Debbie under the name The Kessell Family. Linda wrote several original songs for both cd’s.

Lewis and Linda were blessed with 4 children, Barbara, Diane, Jimmy and Debbie. Linda is survived by her husband, Lewis, daughters Diane (Roger) Kretschmer and Debbie (Ian) Douglas, and sons, Tom Johnson and Jimmy (Shelley) Kessell, 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her daughter Barbara Hepworth Johnson, son in law Chet Hepworth, and grandson Robert Hepworth.


Margaret Newman age 95 of Durand passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Shiawassee County Medical Care Facility in Corunna. There are no services at this time. Arrangements are being handled by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.

Margaret was born June 14, 1921 in Coleman, MI a daughter of Stephen and Lidia (Rozsos) Vargo. On November 17, 1955 she married Roy A. Newman. He preceded her in death. Margaret was a member of the Burns Grange #160 in Bancroft, VFW Auxiliary in Durand and the First Congregational Church in Durand. Prior to her retirement in 1984, she had been employed by Bentley and Smeltzer's for 30 years.

Surviving Margaret is her son, Anson Joel Newman of Lansing; step-children, Ellen Bukovick, Max Newman and Patsy Newman; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and sister, Lydia Gosciniak. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Newman; both of her parents; brother, Paul Vargo; sisters, Mary Olajos, Rose Fersch, Jolan Vargo, Ethel Hallet and Hellen Frezon; and step-son, Pirl Newman.

Lottie E. Stinger age 102 of Charlevoix, formerly of Durand passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Boulder Park Terrace. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Monday, May 15, 2017 at the First Congregational Church in Durand. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are being handled by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.

Lottie was born October 18, 1914 in Mason City, Iowa a daughter of Franklin and Myrtle (Austin) Marlowe. In 1937, she married Richard H. Stinger. He preceded her in death in 1970. Lottie loved traveling the world, Detroit Tigers baseball, and her home in Otsego Lake near Gaylord. Prior to her retirement, she had worked as a secretary for several years at the First Congregational Church in Durand. From 1946-1950 she worked at Michigan Bottle Gas. After retirement, she volunteered tutoring on the Indian reservation in AZ and alternative education in Gaylord.

Lottie is survived by her children, Katherine (Dale) Thiel of East Port, MI and Richard James Stinger of Durand; grandchildren, Christine Marcotte, Susan Thiel, Steven Thiel, Ruth Olsen, Norma Jean Hertzer, and Joanna O'Brien; 11 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Stinger; daughter, Norma Jean Ginther and daughter-in-law, Karen.

Russell F. Weller, age 81 of Lennon passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017.

Russell was born on September 12, 1935 in Durand, the son of Russell and Helen (Frederick) Weller.  He was a graduate of Durand High School and then served in the U.S. Army.  On April 15, 1961 he married Rose Bennett in Black River, NY.     Russell retiired from General Motors after 42 years.

Vicky L. Cain age 57 of Durand passed away Sunday, April 23, 2017 at McLaren Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at the Faith Baptist Church in Durand. Vicky was born April 20, 1960 in Durand, a daughter of Norman and Rose (Locke) Johnson. She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Durand. She is survived by her children, Joseph (Brandi Gray) Weiler and Tanya Weiler; grandchildren, Jasmin, Dakota, and Adena; parents, Norman and Rose; siblings, Cathy, Norman Scott, Becky, and Amy; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gerald "Jerry" G. Warner, age 68 of Branch, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 9, 2017. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, April 14, 2017 at Lovejoy Cemetery in Durand. Arrangements through Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.

Jerry was born August 26, 1948 in Flint, MI a son of Edward and Lucile (Luchenbill) Warner. He attended Durand High School, graduating in 1967. Jerry served his country in the United States Army, 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles during the Vietnam War where he was awarded 2 bronze stars and was honorably discharged in 1970.  Prior to his retirement in 2002, Jerry had been employed by General Motors at the Flint Metal Fabrication Plant for 30 years and was a member of the union local 659.

Jerry is survived by his daughter, Stacy Howell; granddaughter, Samantha; mother, Lucile Warner; siblings, Larry (Linda) Warner, Gary (Gladys) Warner, Mike (Kelly) Warner and Mary (Mike) Stone; sister-in-law, Karen Warner and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward; and brother, Terry.

Kenneth W. Allen age 72 passed away Sunday, April 9, 2017 at his home. A mass of the resurrection will be 10:30 AM. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Durand on Monday, April 17, 2017. Rev. Fr. Jonathan Perrotta will be officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are being handled by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.

Kenneth was born August 21, 1944 in Durand, a son of Arthur and Betty (VanWoert) Allen. On December 18, 1965 he married Josephine Balish. Kenneth was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Durand. He enjoyed wrestling, Kid Rock and taking care of his lawn. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by General Motors in the Engine Plant for many years.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Josephine Allen; children, Angela (Dane) Deisler and Samantha (Dan Newcomb) Allen; grandchildren, Jess Jordan, Justin Jordan, Quinn Deisler and Paige Deisler; great grandchildren, Lidia and Laycee; special relatives, Anna (Gary) Grant, Rose (Terry) Burlingame and Kristina Balish. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and brother, Dennis.

Hazel M. McVicar, age 86 of Ovid, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the Hospice House of Shiawassee County.  There will be no service at this time.  Arrangements through Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Jennings-Lyons Chapel in Owosso.

Hazel was born March 17, 1931 in BonAqua, TN to the late Miles and Charlotte (Bradford) Brown.  She enjoyed reading and loved the time spent with her grandchildren.

Hazel is survived by 4 children: Leston Neal (Doris) McVicar of Indiana, Bonnie (Beryl) Briggs of Ovid, Judy (David) Hall of Mason, Cliff (Michelle) McVicar of Lake City;

Carolyn Anne (Seymour) Nelson age 47 of Corunna passed away Sunday, April 2, 2017 at her home after a brave battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the First Congregational Church in Durand. Pastor Steven Wood will be officiating. Carolyn was born April 23, 1969 in Lansing, MI a daughter of James and Margaret (LaFay) Seymour. She was a graduate of Lansing Everett High School. On July 4, 2008 she married Eric Nelson at their home in Corunna. Carolyn was employed by Consumers Energy as a Closeout Specialist for many years.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Eric Nelson; children, Zachary Kish and Blake Nelson; Father, James Seymour of Lansing; sister, Patricia (Brian) Fish of Lansing and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret (LaFay) Seymour.

Larry R. Brunger age 65 of Durand passed away Friday, March 31, 2017 in Melbourne, FL. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Pastor John Walworth will be officiating. Family will receive friends on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.

Larry was born October 8, 1951 in Durand, a son of Raymond and Ruth (Olin) Brunger. On January 15, 1977 he married Lu Ann Williamson at the Durand Congregational Church. He served in the United States Army as an SP4 rank. He earned a National Defense Service Medal and a Aircraft Crewman's Badge. Larry was a member of the American Legion, AMVETS, University of Michigan Alumni and the Rotary Club. He was also past President of the Durand Band Boosters. He enjoyed all electronics, traveling, family gatherings, connecting with friends on Facebook and watching football. Prior to his retirement he was employed by General Motors for many years.

Larry is survived by his wife, Lu Ann Brunger; children, Christopher (Amanda) Brunger and Amy (Mathew Perry; grandchildren, Sam, Zavier, Charlie and Cole; mother, Ruth Brunger; brother, Loren; and sisters, Linda, Lois and Loretta. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond.

Barbara Jean Mason, 92 of Byron, MI passed away Saturday evening at St. Mary Hospital in Saginaw.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 1:00 at the Swartz Creek Nazarene Church, 7168 Morrish Road.  Pastor Lawrence Gill will officiate with burial to follow at Fremont Cemetery in Bancroft.  There will be a luncheon at the Church immediately after the service before going to the cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Durand on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and at the Church on Wednesday 1 hour before the service.

Barbara was born in Royal Oak, MI on May 13, 1924, the daughter of Lawrence & Myrtle (Goff) Force.  She earned her bachelor's degree in Teaching and was a home ec teacher before raising her family.  She also had worked at the AC Plant helping build airplanes in the war effort.   Barbara married Wilford A. Mason, Jr. on August 13, 1949 in Perry.  He predeceased her last year March 8th.
She was past president of the Bancroft Doll Club.  She had an extensive doll collection and liked to make dolls and the clothes they would wear.

She is survived by her children; Tim (Kim) Mason, Don (Edna) Mason, and Gordon (Jill) Mason, 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, sister-in-laws Betsy & Luella Mason.  She was predeceased by her husband, Wilford, 2 brothers, John and Lawrence and an infant sister.  Memorials are suggested to the Swartz Creek Nazarene Church's Funeral Dinner Fund.  Online condolences may be sent to the family by going to www.watkinsfuneralhomes.com


Rosaria Spagnuolo, age 101, our loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother was called home to her Lord on March 24, 2017.  Born October 2, 1915 in Lapeer, MI.  Rose and her family moved to Durand in 1950 to open  Spagnuolo Grocery which they operated for 27 years.  They moved to Lansing in 1986 to be closer to family, but she remained close to her many friends in Durand.  She was an avid gardener and loved to bowl, both of which she continued to enjoyed until she was 96. She was talented at crocheting beautiful doilies for family and friends.  She enjoyed traveling to Italy.

Surviving are her 4 children Emma Caruso, Jerry (Paula) Spagnuolo, Paul Spagnuolo, and Lorraine (John) Canavan; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Esterina Naccarato, and Assunta (Mario) Caruso; 2 brothers, Louie (Eleanor), and Mario (Emily) Dionise; and many other family members and friends.  Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred in 1990; siblings, Gene (Mary Jane), Albert (Maria), Alfred, and Paul Dionise.

Visitation is 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. Sunday, March 26, with a 7:00 P.M. Rosary all at St. Casimir. Funeral Liturgy is 11:30 A.M. Monday, March 27, 2017 at St. Casimir Church, 815 Sparrow Ave. Lansing, with Fr. Bill Lugger presiding.   Viewing will be 10:30 A.M. Monday until Mass time at church. Barbara L. Eastman, age 67 of Laingsburg went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, March 21, 2017.

Barbara was born on December 4, 1949 in Owosso, the daughter of Vernon and Lulu (Hardy) Bailey.  She was a graduate of Perry High School, class of 1968.  She has worked for Michigan National Bank and Farm Bureau Ins. in Laingsburg but loved being a homemaker and mother.  On May 29, 1971 she married Timothy Eastman in Owosso.  Barbara loved cheering on the spartans, enjoyed anything outdoors and archery with her husband.  She loved her church family and loved the Lord.

Joseph Earle Hamelink, age 45 of Durand, went home to walk with the Lord on Saturday, March 11, 2017. A memorial service will held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 17, 2017 at Resurrection Reformed Church, 5225 Calkins Rd., Flint, MI. Co-officiating pastors Doug and Kristi Kiel. Joe was born November  23, 1971 in Saginaw.  He was meticulous and very organized with his things.  Joe had a great sense of humor, a love for people and could remember anyone's name.

Sgt. Jacob "Jake" Taylor, 24 of Ft. Campbell, KY, died on Wednesday, March 1, 2017.  Jake was born in Owosso, MI on January 10, 1993, the son of David (Geri) Taylor and Dana (George) Fuller.  He lived in the Durand and Lansing areas before joining the U.S. Army where he was stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY.  He married Jacklyn Helman at Hopkinsville, KY on December 30, 2015.  Jacob enjoyed music, playing the drums and guitar.  He is survived by his wife, Jacklyn, his dog Saul, his mother Dana (George) Fuller of Durand, father David (Geri) Taylor of Burlington, Iowa, brothers: Zachary Taylor of Burlington, Iowa, Corey (Bobbi) Fuller of Owosso, Chris (Karen) Fuller of Ovid, sisters: Katherine and Penelope Taylor of Burlington, Iowa, and KeAnna Fuller of Owosso, grandparents Richard (Pat) Taylor of Flint, grandfather Ed Koch of Durand, grandmother Janet Koch of Durand, step grandmother Dena Willard of Burlington, Iowa, cousins, nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his grandmother, Ann Koch.  Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society.

Owen A. Rood Jr. age 94 of Swartz Creek, formerly of Durand passed away Monday, February 27, 2017 at his home. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Pastor Jim Martin will be officiating. Family will receive friends on Friday from 5-8 PM and one hour prior to the service.

Owen was born October 24, 1922 in Joliet, IL, a son of Owen and Euphemia (Ferguson) Rood. In 1937 His father bought him his first printing press. He graduated with a Masters degree in Journalism from Northwestern University. On November 3, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He graduated USMC, OSC and ROS Quantico, VA, Second Lieutenant. He served in the Pacific Area, World War II, First Marine Division, Seventh Marine Regiment, First Battalion, Baker Co. Third Rifle Platoon Leader Okinawa and North China June 1, 1945 - April 6, 1946. Relieved from active duty June 18, 1946. He was promoted to First Lieutenant July 8, 1947. He was ordered back to active duty during the Korean War November 7, 1950. Promoted to Commanding Officer in August of 1951. Relieved from active duty May 1, 1952. Discharged from the military in May of 1957. Owen bought the Durand Express in July, 1952 after being released from active duty. He sold it in 1988 and retired to Zephyrhills, FL. In July, 1992 he returned to ownership of the Durand Express and Shiawassee County Journal in Perry. In December, 1997 he sold publications to the Argus Press. He married Inez Packard-Rood in 2003.

Owen was a active member of the Michigan Press Association from 1952-1997, he served on the Board of Michigan Weekly Newspapers Inc. for 29 years. 4 years as President. He was a life member 3DX, Professional Journalism Society. He was past President and honorary life member of the Durand Area Chamber of Commerce, life member of Reed-Raymond Post 2272 VFW, life member of North Newburg Masonic Lodge 161 and member and past President of the Durand Rotary Club.

Owen is survived by his wife, Inez Packard-Rood; son, Dale (Karen) Rood; daughter, Janice (Kent) Van Kleeck; grandchildren, Steven (Christy) Rood, Dustin Van Kleeck, Gena (Phillip) Durrett and Kristin (Van Kleeck) Guildford; great grandchildren, Ian Durrett, Thomas, Bryson and Cameron Rood, and Clark and Casson Guildford; also several step-children and step-grandchildren.

Lawrence J. Curey, age 65 of Bancroft passed away Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Memorial Health Care Center in Owosso.

A memorial celebration will be held on Sunday March 12, 2017 at his home from 2-6 p.m.  His family is being served by Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Durand Chapel.

Lawrence was born on February 17, 1952 in Flint, the son of Ernest Sr. and Mae (Williams) Curey.  On September 17, 1977 he married Jackie Conklin in Fenton, MI.  Lawrence was a truck driver where he hauled cars.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jackie, two brothers, Ernest Jr. and Dennis(Cheryl) Curey, sisters, Diana Michael, Karen (Marvin) Martin and Ellen (Jim Carter) Curey, many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Betty L. Jones, age 90 of Durand passed away Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Genesys Health Park in Grand Blanc.

Betty  was born on October 23, 1926 in Bell Oak, MI, the daughter of L.B. and Vera B. (Rosser) Chase.  She was a graduate of Webberville High School and married Basil Jones on August 10, 1946 in Durand and he predeceased her in 2014.  She was retired as a EMT for DVA Ambulance for  32 years.  Betty was a member of First Methodist Church, Citizen of the year in 1992 in Durand and EMT of the year for the State of Michigan in 2000.

Betty May Murray, age 88 of Durand, formally of Flint, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at the Argentine Care Center.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 11am at the Durand Congregational Church, Pastor Steve Wood will officiate with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Vernon.  The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, on Monday, February 13, 2017 from 6pm-8pm and again on Tuesday from 10am-2pm.

Betty was born may 8, 1928 in Durand, Michigan to the late Henry Ralph and Fernande Pasquline (Augizeau) Liestenfeltz.  She graduated from Dye High School in Flint in 1946 and on January 11, 1947 she married Richard "Dick" Murray in Durand.  Betty spent her career in automotive manufacturing, she worked 19 years for the Smelzer Corporation, 9 years for Electrical Mechanical, and was in housekeeping at Durand Senior care for 2 years.  Betty enjoyed anything to do with nature, especially bird watching, gardening, and flowers.  Betty was a long standing member of the Durand Congregational Church, she served on various church boards, church social projects, and sang in the choir, she was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary #2772 for 51 years. 

Mrs. Murray is survived by her six children; Diane Brown, Michael (Janet) Murray, Alan (Belinda) Murray, Mark (Julie) Murray, Timothy (Jeanette) Murray, and Patrick (Kimberley) Murray.  She also leaves to cherish her memory, 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.  

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Richard, her brother Chester Liestenfeltz, sisters, Audry and Blenna, and her son in-law James Brown.

Rose M. McLaughlin age 87 of Durand passed away Monday, February 6, 2017 at Memorial Healthcare Center of Owosso. Rose was born September 20, 1929 in Ferris Township, MI a daughter of Clyde and Elizabeth (Stoeckle) Sigourney. On April 28, 1956 she married William McLaughlin. She enjoys playing B.I.N.G.O., solitaire, walking, traveling, church and hosting family gatherings.  She was a member of Topps and The First Congregational Church in Durand.

Rose is survived by her husband, William McLaughlin; children, Marion Booth and Tamhra McLaughlin; grandchildren, Joseph Holloway, Cassandra Huffman and Cole Huffman; great grandchildren, Jordon Holloway, Mason Luchenbill and Jakob Patierno; and brother, Rick Sigourney. She is preceded in death by both of her parents; 4 brothers; 3 sisters; and great grandson, Joseph Holloway II.



Roger Roy Bannister, age 74 of Perry, passed away at his home on Monday, January 31, 2017.  A memorial service to honor Roger's life will be held on Friday, February 3, 2017 at 1pm, at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11am until the time of the service.


Christina A. Welch, age 60 of Durand, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at her home.

Joyce was born July 31, 1926 in Lansing, MI a daughter of Clyde and Florence (Grindling) Nelson. On September 22, 1945 she married Herbert Baker. Joyce enjoyed quilt making, choir, study club at the Bancroft Congregational Church, going to Florida, doing puzzles and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Herbert Baker; children, Dawn Bentley, Rod (Lori) Baker, Ron (Loraine) Baker, Bob (Cindy) Baker and Roger Karen Baker; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and brother, Richard (Janet) Nelson. She was preceded in death by both of her parents; grandson, Steven Bentley; and brother, Marvin Nelson.

Charles Emmett Wiseley Jr., age 69 of Gaines, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 4, 2017.  Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor and celebrate Charles's life will be announced in the spring. 

Charles was born on March 21, 1947 in Durand, Michigan to the late Charles Emmett and Ina Mattie (Whitehead) Wiseley.  On October 8, 1977 he married Darlene Marie Willis at the Durand United Methodist Church.  Charles spent 28 years at General Motors as an engine tester before his retirement.  He enjoyed traveling whether it be by car, boat, motorcycle, or snowmobile.  He enjoyed time spent at the cabin in Gaylord, and most of all, any time spent with his family. 

Charles is survived by his wife of 39 years, Darlene, his children; Charles (Dawn) Wiseley, Dawn (David) Schuetz, Jeffery (DeeAnn) Wiseley, Jeffrey (Bobbie Jo) Gipson, Tina (Wyatt) Beach, and Tiffanie (Dan) Witherell.  His sisters; Roann (Louie) Warner, Linda Patsey, and his only brother Butch (Marion) Wiseley. 

He was predeceased by both of his parents.

Michael J. Pavich, 93 of Perry,  passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Hospice House of Shiawassee County.  A memorial service will be held at Perry United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 11:00 AM.  Interment will follow at Fremont Cemetery in Bancroft.  Pastor Nancy Powers will officiate.  The family will receive friends at the church 1 hour before the service.

Michael was born in Flint, MI on November 20, 1923, the son of Marko & Ellen (Lybci) Pavich.  He graduated from Brand Blanc High School and on August 21, 1954 he married Julia Anna Szakal in Bancroft, MI.  Michael was a member of the Perry United Methodist Church and enjoyed his time on the computer.  He worked as a tractor trailer hauler for 30 years and then a real estate agent in the industrial and commercial fields.

Abe was born in Lennon, MI on August 17, 1919, the son of William & Dorothy (Nelson) Reimel.   On October 5, 1940 he married Helen Reynolds in Durand, MI and this past October celebrated 76 years of marriage together.  Abe served his country in the Navy from 1944-46.  He attended Bancroft Congregational Church, was a member of Durand Masonic Lodge, and enjoyed painting and woodworking in his leisure.  He worked for over 30 years for Simplicity in Durand as a welder and supervisor before his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, 4 daughters; Judy (Gerald) Viener of Byron, Becky (Steve) Durling of Bancroft, Sue (Ron) Tomalia of Owosso, and Martha (Bill) Gillett of New Lothrop, 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren with twins on the way, 3 sisters; Gloria Harding of Lennon, Eileen (Ron) Hawley of Swartz Creek, and Peg Abrams of Swartz Creek, 2 sisters-in-law; Norma Reimel & Glenda Reimel, nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brothers, Jerry and Nelson and granddaughter Susan Durling.  Memorials are suggested to the Bancroft Congregational Church.  Online condolences may be sent to the family by going to www.watkinsfuneralhomes.com


Robert Wayne Bell, age 82 of Durand, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2016 at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 11am at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel, Rev. Fr. Jonathan Perrotta will celebrate with burial to follow in Great Lakes National Cemetery, on Friday, December 30, 2016 at 10am.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3-7pm on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. 

Robert was born on August 6, 1934 in Canton, Missouri to the late Frank and Pearl (Alford) Bell.  He served his country faithfully in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on July 5, 1951.  On July 15, 1989 he married Diana (Anderson) Padgett.  Bob was a building contractor and built several homes, he was also the owner of Bob Bell Home Repair and Remodeling.  Bob was a member of the Durand Eagles where he served as trustee for two years and also the Durand Moose Lodge.  Bob enjoyed shooting pool, bowling, golfing and going to watch his grandchildren's school activities. 

Mr. Bell is survived by his beloved wife, Diana, his son, Robert Jr. (Glenda) Bell, his daughters; Lisa, Cindy, and Serena, step-children; Krystal (Duane) Kuran, John A. Padgett and David (Brendi) Padgett, 13 grandsons, 3 granddaughters, 5 great-grandsons, and 1 great granddaughter.  

He was predeceased by parents, his first wife, Marilyn Jo McDaniel, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

Memorial donations in Robert's name are suggested to his family.


Mary A. Soldan, age 79 of Durand passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016 at her home.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Durand Chapel with Pastor John Walworth officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Vernon.  Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary was born on December 14, 1937 in Durand, the daughter of Clifford and Anna (Fladinsky) Riddle.  She attended Durand High School and later received her G.E.D.
On October 25, 1988 she married Lloyd Soldan in Durand and he predeceased her in 2012.  Mary was a homemaker.

She is survived by five children; Cheryl (Ward) Simpson, Beth (Michael) Soldan, Scott Fox, Rick Fox and Brian Fox, many grandchildren and many great grandchildren, step children; Evelyn (Rex Rose) Fox, Phillip Soldan, Katherine (Bruce) Case and Kimberly (Lloyd) Bates and one sister Sharon Yerian.  She was predeceased by her daughter Robin Herrick, great granddaughter Morgan Fields, sister; Pat Gunsel and  step- children;; Edward, Brenda and Floyd Soldan.  Memorials are suggested to the family.  On-line condolences can be made to www.watkinsfuneralhomes.com
