OBITUARIES
Mary Elizabeth (Labb) Brown, age 86, died peacefully on Saturday, March 10, 2018 in Dearborn, Michigan.

Mary was born on March 6, 1932 in Durand, Michigan, to Floyd and Mildred (Hynes) Labb. She graduated from Durand High School in 1950 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Education from Michigan State College in 1954.

After graduation, Mary taught Model Business Office at Kimball High School in Royal Oak. She retired from teaching in 1963 to raise her children. Later in life, she and her husband had a second career as franchise owners of Fantastic Sam’s in Dearborn Heights and Inkster, Michigan.

Mary married her high school sweetheart, Robert James Brown, on November 10, 1956. She and Bob built a wonderful life together. They enjoyed traveling, theatre, golf, and many friendships. Mary’s pride and joy were her children and grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Allyson (Steve) Hillman of Bonita Springs, Florida, and son Ted (Deanna) Brown of Birmingham, Michigan; four grandchildren, Jacob Hillman, Bridget Hillman, Marlena Brown, and Audrey Brown; her brother James Labb, and sister-in-law Ardis McLaren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; sisters-in-law Jean Labb and Donna Varblow, and brother-in-law Don Varblow.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 24th at St. Anselm Parish in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. The family will receive friends at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday until the time of the service. There will be a luncheon honoring Mary immediately following.

Linda P. Domby age 70 of Durand passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at the Durand Senior Care and Rehab Center. A memorial service will be 12 noon on Saturday, March 17, 2018. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Linda was born June 26, 1947 in Owosso a daughter of Clyde and Gloria (Jackson) Gulick. She enjoyed traveling, walking, bicycling and cooking.

Linda is survived by her children, Lisa Domby and Kevin (Sara) Domby; granddaughter, Katie Domby; and brother, Larry (Connie) Gulick. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Gloria Gulick.

Robert Marks age 83 of Owosso, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Pleasant View. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Family will receive friends on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM and one hour prior to the service.

Robert was born November 26, 1934 in Owosso, MI a son of Justin and Marjorie (Herring) Marks. On May 12, 1978 he married Rosetta Hopkins. Robert enjoyed woodworking, boating, fishing, and being a handyman. Prior to his retirement in 1988, he had been employed by General Motors for 35 years.

Robert is survived by his wife, Rosetta Marks; children, Barry (Debra) Marks, Kevin (Jackie) Marks and Kurt Marks; 7 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Marks and sisters, Maxine Bohnsky and Jane Kirkman. He was preceded in death by both of his parents.

Helen Therese Clair Folsom was born October 3, 1926 in Guelph Ontario, Canada. She attended Marygrove College in Detroit, MI where she received her degree as a dietitian in 1947. After interning at Harper Hospital in Detroit she secured a position at Hurley Hospital in Flint. She married Russell Folsom from Flint at Fort Benning, Georgia May 12, 1956. Helen and Russ lived in Flint most of their married life where Helen continued to work at Hurley until January 1984.

Helen was spiritual, faithful and very devoted to her family. She enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, reading and making special birthday cards for her children and grandchildren.

For the last 6 years, Helen was lovingly taken care of by Jodi Miller, until Helen was peacefully raised up on Angels wings on February 27, 2018 surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her children, Diane Folsom, Edward (Julie) Folsom, Virginia (Paul) Williamson and Barbara Deering; grandchildren, Carl (Tonya) Trimble, Angela (Steven) Schultz, Sara Folsom, Anna Folsom, Katy Deering and Courtney Deering; and 4 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Folsom, grandson, Joel Trimble, both of her parents; and 7 siblings.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday, March 2, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Durand. Rev. Fr. Jonathan Perrotta will be officiating. Family will receive friends on Thursday at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Durand from 1-3 and 5-7 PM with a Rosary prayed at 6:00 PM.

Aiden B. Walters, 13 of Durand, died Saturday, February 24, 2018 due to an accident.  Aiden was born in Flint, MI on March 3, 2004, the son of Bradley Walters and Denese (Plaschek) Franks.  He was a student at Corunna High School. 

Aiden is survived by his father, Bradley, half-brothers Brandon & Andrew, half-sister Erin, Grandparents Margo & Bradley Walters, Danny Franks, aunt Stephie, great grandmother Fran Plaschek, cousins Chelsi & Lance, aunts Dawn & Ronald Jake, Tami & Kenneth Smith. 

Aiden was preceded in death by his mother in 2010.

Walter Loren Richards, 90, of Bancroft, passed away peacefully at the Hospice House of Shiawassee County on Saturday, February 24, 2018.  A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday, March 3, 2018 from 2-5pm at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.  Final rest with Military Honors will take place in the Byron Cemetery on June 16, 2018 at 12-noon. 

Walt was born in Cohoctah, Michigan on May 27, 1927 to the late Stowel Daniel and Emma Ethel (Spiece) Richards.  He attended Byron Schools and entered the United States Navy on July 31, 1945, he was honorably discharged on July 31, 1947.  On October 9, 1954 Walter married Barbara Lee Winzer in Fenton, and together raised three daughters.  Walt spent most of his working career as a truck driver, hauling milk and cattle early in his life. 

Walter is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara, his daughters; Sara (Chris) Price, Kathryn Perez (Steven), and Martha Richards.  His grandchildren; Martha (Greg) Nolkemper, Crystle (Arnold) Martin, Audrey (Jessie) Yeager, Katie (Jenna Gutierrez) Kent, and Joanna (Jeremy) Luchenbill.  His great-grandchildren; Collin, Broadrick, Madilyn, Isabell, Devon, Corissa, and Jylian.  His Sister, Doris Boillat, also many nieces, nephews and extended family. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Elizabeth Corwin, and brother, Wilbur Richards.

Harvey S. Sutter age 88 of Gaines passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018 at his home. A mass of the resurrection will be 11:00 AM Friday, February 23, 2018 at St. Bartholomew Anglican Church. Family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Watkins Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.

Harvey was born August 5, 1929 in Buffalo, NY a son of John and Florence (Spors) Sutter. In 1953 Harvey married his first wife, Phoebe Jane Young. She preceded him in 1967. Shortly after he married his second wife, Verdie O Kennedy. She preceded him in 2009. Harvey enjoyed working on anything with motors, building things out of wood, fishing, hunting, watching and playing baseball. He was a big Tigers fan. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he had been employed by Buick for 30 years.

Harvey is survived by his children, Terry (Rob) Hough, Betty (Tim) Daley, Mary Anne (Larry) Judson, David Kennedy and Wendy Ash; grandchildren, Eric, Carol, Kathleen, Anna, Elizabeth, Susan and Cody; 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Florence Everhart, Doris Gibson and Marjorie Buxton; and brother, Wayne Sutter.

Mark Robert Weber age 69 of Gaines passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at his home. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Monday, February 19, 2018 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Family will receive friends on Sunday, from 2-6 PM and one hour prior to the service.

Mark was born June 10, 1948 in Gaines, MI a son of Alexander and Lorena (Griffin) Weber. He enjoyed salmon fishing and going on cruises. Prior to his retirement in 1999, he had been employed by Buick for 34 years.

Mark is survived by his children, Tamarah (Dan) Weber-Vasher, Brent (Stephanie) Weber and Christina Dear; 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; mother, Lorena Weber; 2 brothers; 4 sisters and his ex-wife, Wanda Weber. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Thomas Weber and father, Alexander Weber.

June Marie Roddy, 88, of Durand passed away peacefully on Friday, February 8, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family.

June was born on June 18, 1929 in Durand, Michigan to the late James Vincent and Isabella Beatricia (Ward) Summers. On December 28, 1946 June married James Patrick Roddy in Durand, he predeceased her on December 15, 1996. June spent her life as homemaker, raising her children & grandchildren, involved in her community, and very civically active. She was The Durand Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 2012, a member of the Red Hat Society, and held a seat on the City of Durand Board of Review for over 30 years.

Mrs. Roddy is survived by her children; Jim (Joan) Roddy, and Greg (Amy) Roddy, her grandchildren; Eric Roddy, Jamie (Derrick) Ocenasek, Kimberly Roddy, Joshua Roddy, and Jacob (Hallie) Roddy, her great-grandchildren; Irie and Shey Ocenasek, her sister; Betty Jose, and her beloved dog, Izzi.

June was also predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Kitty and Leo Summers.

A memorial gathering to honor and celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 4pm-8pm with a short service starting at 5pm at the Durand Union Station, 200 Railroad St. Durand, Michigan 48429

Robert "Bob" Stevenson, age 65 of Durand, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2018 at his home.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.  Pastor John Walworth will officiate with final rest in Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon.  Family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday 1 hour prior to the service. 

Bob was born June 19, 1952 in Durand to Donald and Marjorie (Higby) Stevenson.  Bob served his country faithfully in the Army during the Vietnam Era.  He was a commercial fisherman for over 40 years in Oregon and Washington State with his 2 fishing vessels that he named after his grandmothers, Frieda and Iva.  He enjoyed collecting vintage Buick cars and reading about history.

Bob is survived by his son, Lee Stevenson of Durand; mother, Marjorie Stevenson of Durand; 2 sisters: Ann (James) Pilon of Durand and Jane Walters of Kentucky and 3 nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald, in 2017.

Mary A. Hall age 59 of Swartz Creek passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018 at her home. There will be no services at this time. Arrangements are being handled by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.

Mary was born May 6, 1958 in Flint, a daughter of Curtis and Mary (Vance) Aldridge. On December 17, 1994 she married Dale Hall. Prior to her retirement in 2017, she had been employed by General Motors for 30 years.

Mary is survived by her husband, Dale Hall; children, Robert and Daniel Harper; 3 grandchildren; mother, Mary Jordan; and 4 brothers. She was preceded in death by her father, Curtis Aldridge; and step-father, Thomas Jordan.


Barry Stewart Krembs II, 53 of Durand passed away February 3, 2018 after courageously fighting a long battle with multiple Systems Atrophy.

Barry was born August 11, 1964 in St. Louis, MO to Barry and Patricia (Payne) Krembs. He served his country in the United States Army, a veteran of the Persian Gulf War. He married Tamara Souva on January 25, 1992 in Bowling Green, OH. While stationed in Ft. Drum, NY he volunteered with the Black River Ambulance Squad as an AEMT and he was also a Cub Scout Leader. After moving to Durand he continued his volunteer work with the Boy Scouts, Knights of Columbus and he served on the parish council.

Barry is survived by his wife, Tammy; sons, Barry III of Ann Arbor and Matthew (Tailor) of Traverse City; father, Barry; stepmother, Simone; brothers, Bradley and Brandon; parents-in-law, Norm and Lorna Souva of Spruce; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Patty; and sister, Bridget.

Barry has donated his body to science. A funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are being handled by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Burial at Great Lakes National Cemetery will take place at a later date. Richard Gene Matthews, age 69, of Anderson, Indiana, formerly of Vernon passed in his home Sunday, January 21st, 2018.

The family will receive friends at the Vernon United Methodist Church from 1 to 2:30PM with a memorial service starting at 2:30 on Saturday, February 3rd. Pastor Steve Wood officiating.

Richard was born on April 16, 1948 in Durand, MI to the late Lee and Thelma(Mesler) Matthews.  He graduated from Corunna High School in 1967.  He proudly served in the Army in Vietnam.  He worked a short time at Marsh Products before purchasing Matthews Service and Towing from his father in 1976.  He proudly served the Shiawassee County community for their auto service and towing needs for over twenty years.  As a twilight career he drove a tractor trailer for various carriers before finally retiring in 2008.

He is survived by his son, Brad(Kristin) Matthews and daughter, Becky(Josh) Matthews-Pease and his grandson Andrew Matthews, his sister Joyce Darling and brother Raymond Matthews.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Shirley Matthews, Carl Matthews, Betty Winer and Robert Matthews.

Wilma G. Jeter, age 89 of Lennon, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018 at McLaren-Flint.  Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.  Pastor John Walworth will officiate with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon.  Family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 5-8 pm.

Wilma was born on October 1, 1928 in Elizabethton, TN to the late Floyd and Emma (Holland) Nave.  On August 18, 1945, Wilma married Herman J. Jeter in Welch, WV and together raised 4 children.  Herman passed on January 16, 2012.

Wilma was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Gaines.  She enjoyed weekend trips up north and loved spending time with her family.

Mrs. Jeter is survived by her 4 children: Charles (Cindy) Jeter, Larry (Linda) Jeter, Roger (Joanne) Jeter, Gloria (Mark) Cooney; grandchildren: Heidi, Brenda, Shannon, Erick, Rachel, Joseph, Stephine; great grandchildren: Calvin, Cameron, Kaili, Grant, Abby; 2 sisters: Delores Bowles, Connie Kelly and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman and brothers: C.J. and Bill.

Jerry Douglas Conrad, age 82 of Durand died Tuesday January 9, 2018 at the Hospice House of Shiawassee County.

Jerry was born June 26, 1935 to O.B. and Dorothy Conrad in Durand. Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and when he was younger working on Hot Rods. Most of all, Jerry enjoyed spending time with family.

Funeral Services will be Monday, January 15, 2018, 11:00, at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Durand with burial to follow at Fremont Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 14 from 1-4 PM.

He is survived by his children: Brian Douglas Conrad (Patrice) of Grand Rapids, Lynda Kay Freeman of Lansing, Diane Leigh Morgan (Andy) of Alto, Kevin Brooks Conrad (Jill Bailey) of Lansing, his companion: Ellen Rissin, brothers: Richard (Josie) Conrad, Tom Conrad (Jean), 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death in 1989 by his wife Mary.

Dorine E. Sill age 88 of Gaines passed away Sunday, January 7, 2018 at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Gaines United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Dorine was born January 27, 1929 in Detroit, MI a daughter of Garland and Blanche (Jubb) Ball. She attended Deer Creek Country School, Linden Elementary School, she graduated from Byron High School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Michigan State University in teaching. On October 18, 1947 Dorine married John “Jack” Sill. She was a member of the Gaines United Methodist Church, the Gaines United Methodist Women’s Club and the Eastern Stars. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. Prior to her retirement in 1986, she was a school teacher for Byron Area Schools for many years.

Dorine is survived by her children, Pam (John) Ebner, Bill (Pat) Sill, Shirley Riley and Jackie (James) Crain; grandchildren, Adam (Dawn) Richter, Rob (Aimee) Richter, Christine Ebner, Carla (Jeff) Kimsel, William (Molly) Sill, Pat (Kaytee) Riley, John (Emily) Crain and Jacob Crain; great grandchildren, Marilyn Richter, Rebecca and Evelyn Richter, Jadyn, Aubrey and Kalvin Kimsel, Malachi and Malala Sill, Margaret Riley and Grayson Crain; sister, Carolyn (Sam) Olrich; son-in-law, Ray Richter; and several nieces and nephews. Thomas S. Leamy age 52 of Lennon passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Thomas was born June 7, 1965 in Flint, MI a son of Clarence and Kathryn (Rowe) Leamy. On June 18, 1994 he married Chrissandra Vandendries. He enjoyed fishing, kayaking and spending time with his family. He worked for Fogelsongers Affordable Flooring.

Surviving Thomas is his wife, Chris Leamy; mother, Joan Leamy; brother, Bob (Kay) Leamy; sister, Diana (Gary) Terry; fishing and kayaking buddy, Jay Linzey and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Leamy.

David George Rollend, 79, of Henderson, passed away at his home on Sunday, December 31, 2017.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 1pm at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel, Pastor John Walworth will officiate, burial will follow in Lovejoy Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11am until the time of the service. 

David was born on August 26, 1938 in New Baltimore, Michigan to the late Roy and Mabel Lorraine (Semlow) Rollend.  On January 25, 1958 David married Virginia Behnke in Mt. Clemmons, Michigan. 

David spent most of his working career at the Schmelzer Plant in Durand, he spent 19 years there before retiring.  David enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors, especially fishing and boating. 

David is survived by his children; Sandy (Mike) Hobart, Kathy (David) Robinson, and Jessica (Jeff) Patsey, his grandchildren; Michelle (Spencer) Smith, and Michael (Shana) Hobart, also his great-grandchildren; Cameron, Adriana, Bailey, Maddysen, and Michael.

He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia in 2000, his son, David George Rollend Jr. in 1970, his brother, Donald Rollend and his sister, Clara Richardson.

Our beautiful daughter Melissa Kaye Marsh, 47, died December 28 in Cozumel, Mexico.

After a wonderful week vacationing with her beloved John Dillon, she went for a last swim, got caught in a riptide and tragically drowned. Melissa loved being in water and died doing what she loved.

Missy was born August 5, 1970 to Gary and Linda (Dougherty) Marsh. She graduated from Durand in 1988 and dental assisting thereafter, eventually joining the family business, Marsh Monument Company in Durand.

Three years ago, Melissa had melanoma. She battled thru treatment which severely damaged her heart but she survived, her heart miraculously healed, and we anticipated a complete cure.

She is survived by John, her parents, her brother Michael and his wife Mandy(Cooper) Marsh and their son Maxwell, who was her special joy, John’s children Emily, Nathan and Ethan Dillon, his granddaughter Harper, aunts, uncles, cousins and many close and dear friends.

She was “MiMi” to Maxwell, Carrigan and Gracie. Her desire was to start a college fund for her special “kids”. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to fulfill her wish. Donations can be made to her parents or John to make this a reality.

Lastly, we extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Eduardo Sanchez who died attempting to rescue Missy. Our thanks go to all the others who assisted her and John in Mexico.

Thomas L. Behnke age 80 of Commerce Township passed away December 25, 2017 at his home. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, December 29, 2017 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Thomas was born March 15, 1937 in Durand, a son of Otto and Dorothy (Larimer) Behnke. On March 2, 1957 he married his first wife, Shirley Chandler. She preceded him in death in 2001. On June 25, 2003 he married Carol Jenkins. Thomas enjoyed restoring cars, wood working, he was a draftsman and he could build anything and everything. Prior to his retirement he had been employed by Simplicity in Durand for many years.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Carol Behnke; children, Thomas (Brenda) Behnke and Kim (Edward II) Cords; grandchildren, Heather, Jessica, Samantha and Dillon Thomas; great grandchildren, Elijah and Lily; sister, Shirley Dilsworth; sister-in-law, J.J. Behnke and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Behnke; both of his parents; brothers, Robert and Kenneth; grandsons, Thomas Joel Behnke and Edward Tyler Cords; 2 sister-in-laws and 1 brother-in-law.

Dallas L. Cowen, 91 of Durand, passed away on Sunday December 17, 2017 at Durand Senior Care.  Funeral services will be held at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Durand on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Noon.  Pastor John Walworth will officiate with burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Vernon.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM.

Dallas was born in Bear Grass, North Carolina on July 11, 1926, the son of Lloyd Y Magdalene (Bullock) Cowen.  He enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Hawaii during WWII where he was an aviation mechanic.  On June 16, 1951 he married Shirley Jeanette Rinker at the Durand Congregational Church.  Dallas was an avid golfer and bowler and he and Shirley wintered in Punta Gorda, FL.  He retired as a currier for RESD after 7 years and had worked at Simplicity for 15 years and also had his own TV repair service.

Dallas is survived by his wife of 66 years, Shirley,  his sister Betty Benson of Durand and Dick Nichols of FL, nephew Bruce Benson and his sons Ethan & Garrett, niece Bethany & Kurt Austin and their sons Kurt, Jr. & Renee, Jeremy and Tyler, 4 grandchildren of Kurt & Beth, Olivia, Cruz, Cameron, and Colton, Shirley's sisters Sally & Dick Marr and their sons Rick & Roy, Florine Ames of Jacksonville, FL and many other nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his son Jimmy in 1992.  Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.  Online condolences may be sent to the family by going to www.watkinsfuneralhomes.com


Betty F. Kish, age 82 of Cedarville, MI, formerly of Durand passed away Sunday, December 17, 2017 at her daughters home.

Betty was born on April 12, 1935 in Lafollette, TN, the daughter of McKinley and Daisie (Reid) Wilson.  On January 11, 1954 she married William Kish in Jacksboro, TN.  Betty was a past member of the Lescheneaux Lions Club and the Durand Eagles Aux. 3851.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, William, and her daughter Joey (Keith) Trippensee,  grandchildren, Paula , Andrew (Fi Nicole Grillo), Mickinley (Erin) , Kayla (Doug Bonmon) Allan(Patsy), Bobby (Tabitha) and Ryan (Erin)  great-grandchildren, Madilyn, Brianna, Hayden Dominick, McKenzie,Preston (Fiancee Brittney) and Megan (Woody) and Tyler, great-great grandchildren, Audrey, Bailey, Caroline, Mallory, Willow, Hudson and Grayson, and brother Thomas Wilson.

Betty was predeceased by her son, William J. Kish Jr., sisters, Gaynell and Ruth and brothers, Jimmy, Kenneth, William, Clyde, Eddie and Joe.

Mary Powell was born June 16, 1917 to John and Katie (Dudas) Barko.  Mary was one of ten children, 5 girls and 5 boys.  Only 2 sisters remain living.

Mary married Robert H. Powell December 26, 1934.  He preceded her in death on January 16, 1982.  She later married Ralph H. Cottenham in Florida March 22, 1983.  He passed away February 11, 2012.

Mary Powell received her Angel wings on December 17, 2017 with her daughters at her side.

Robert was born May 16, 1927 in Durand, MI a son of William and Ruth (McIntyre) Amidon. On August 28, 1950 he married Ellen Fox. She preceded him in death in 2009. Robert volunteered for the Durand Senior Center. He enjoyed fishing, camping, playing card games, collecting sports cards, woodworking and socializing with friends and family. He served in the United States Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Meriwether. Prior to his retirement, he had worked for Buick doing machine repairs for many years.

Robert is survived by his children, Connie (John) Aspinwall, Marilyn Henderson, and Robin Amidon; grandchildren, Joshua (Angela) McKinnis, Angela Cooper, Bradford (Nina) McKinnis, Rachel (Frank) Ketchum, Amanda Henderson, and Matthew Mulnix; great grandchildren, Ethan, Mason, Kyle, Kelsey, Chloe, Spencer, and Charlie; and great-great grandchildren, Daytin, Jayden, and Malibu. Chris Allen Martin, 68 of Durand, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2017 at Hospice House of Shiawassee County.  A memorial service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 3pm at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. 

Chris was born on August 24, 1949 to the late Grant and Betty (Landis) Martin.  He graduated from Flushing High School in the class of 1967 and spent most of his life working in various factories, but his favorite job was driving bus for Indian Trails.  Chris served his county faithfully in the United States Navy from July 31, 1968 to March 26, 1972.  Chris enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors, he especially enjoyed fishing, golf, and camping.  He spent 15 years as a volunteer Fireman for Mt. Morris Township Fire Department. 

Chris is survived by his children; Amy (Matt) Chrzan, Aaron (Esther) Martin, and Andy (Brenda) Martin.  His grandchildren; Makayla Chrzan, Makenna Chrzan, Halie Martin, Julia Martin, Sydney Martin, and Carley Martin.  His siblings; Kendall (Janet) Martin, Tim (Deb) Martin, and Terry (Jan) Martin, also many nieces and nephews, and his special friend, Ellen Judson. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Hurschel D. Hendrickson age 67 of Durand passed away Friday, November 24, 2017 at Hyde Park Memory Care in Flushing. A graveside service will be 2:30 PM on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Hawkins Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.

Hurschel was born September 15, 1950 in Shirley, AK a son of Wesley and Ima (Carroll) Hendrickson. He enjoyed riding motorcycles. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement, he been employed by General Motors for many years.

Hurschel is survived by his children, Marty (Tracy) Dale, Christina Hendrickson, Michael Hendrickson and Amy Hendrickson; and grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Alexys, Austin, Logan and Dylan Hendrickson and Carter Kramer.

Errol J Johnson, 70, returned to his heavenly home on November 21, 2017 after a valiant battle with cancer.  His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace. 

Errol came to know his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in 1975 late one night lying awake in bed; he was baptized the following year.  Errol’s life verse was Romans 8:28, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Errol was a faithful servant of God and loved his church family.  He enjoyed serving the church as Sunday school teacher, Awana council time helper, senior saints leader, serving in his community group, and an elder.  Errol, who was known as "Mr. J" to the church children, was known for his quiet spirit and infectious smile.  Even though his three-year struggle with cancer, "Mr. J" strived to be at as many children’s outreach events as possible.

Errol was also involved with Lansing Area Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) for years. He served as the Chairman of the Board and also helped with the Five-Day Clubs and with the Ark during the Shiawassee county fair. 

Errol also served his country by enlisting with the United States Coast Guard in 1964 and was discharged honorably in 1970.  During his time as a Coast Guardsman, he was stationed at Manitou Island, Muskegon, and Munising, Michigan.  Errol also served abroad in Sardinia, Italy.

In his personal time, Errol enjoyed camping in Northern Michigan, drawing, writing poetry, and spending time with his family and friends.

Errol faithfully served his family as a devoted husband, loving father, and patient grandfather.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Lila and Arvid Johnson and leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his wife, Patty, of 44 years; son, Jacob (Wendy) Johnson of San Ramon, CA; daughter, Sally (Joel) Koskan of Wood, SD; 7 grandchildren: Ruby and Oliver Johnson, Echo, Anna, Jace, Mila, and Emma Koskan; and 3 brothers, Mike (Darlene) Johnson of Schoolcraft, MI, Jack (Chom) Johnson of Colorado Springs, CO, and Gary Johnson of Eaton Rapids, MI.

Wilma was a member of The First Congregational Church in Durand, she volunteered for the Durand Sportsman's Association, Shiawassee Humane Society and the Red Cross Blood Mobile. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, painting and trap shooting. Prior to her retirement in 1988 she had been employed by Simplicity Engineering as a parts sales manager.

Wilma is survived by her children, Edward (Nan) Turner of Bancroft, MI, Mary Faichney of Gowen, MI and Shari (Dean) Black of Corunna, MI; grandchildren, Jill Boots, Jacob Turner, Daniel, Alex, John and Trevor Faichney and Eric and Leah Black; sister, Crystal (Binger) Lab; niece, Royanne Munson; and nephew, Tim Lab. Donald G. Stevenson age 90 of Durand passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Courtyard Manor of Swartz Creek. Donald was born July 12, 1927 in Durand, a son of William and Iva (Holmes) Stevenson. Donald served in the Merchant Marines during W.W.II. He was discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1946. On October 16, 1948 he married Marjorie Higby. Donald served on the Community Health Board and the School board for many years. Prior to his retirement in 1982 he was a distributer for Standard Oil and served on the Fire Department for 25 years.

Donald is survived by his wife, Marjorie Stevenson; children, Ann (James) Pilon, Robert Stevenson and Jane Walters; 4 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and 4 brothers.

Marjorie Mabel Woodgate, age 89 of Lennon, passed away on Friday, October 20, 2017 at Memorial Healthcare.  A memorial service to honor and celebrate her life will be held on Monday, October 23, 2017 at the Durand VFW at 11am.  The family will receive friends beginning at 10am, a lunch will follow the service.   

Marjorie was born on January 26, 1928 in Pickford, Michigan to the late Maxwell and Margaret (Hall) Lehigh.  She graduated  from Pickford High School in the class of 1945 and spent her life as a homemaker.  On February 11, 1957 she married Clifton James Woodgate in Angola, Indiana.  Marjorie ran the bingo for the VFW, she was a member of the Eagles, Loaves and Fishes, and volunteered at several different places. 

Marjorie is survived by her children; James Clifton (Patty) Woodgate of Memphis, TN. Karin (Nick) Riccobono of Novi, MI. Clifton "Buzz" Arthur (Julia) Woodgate of Roscommon, MI. Kathleen Nitz of Howell, MI. and Kevin (Shawn) Woodgate of Byron, MI. also her 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and her brother John (Iris) Lehigh of Sault, MI.

David C. Feight age 81 of Laingsburg passed away, Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Sparrow Health Systems in Lansing.

Wendy Jane Mansfield, age 56 of Lennon, passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at her home.  She was born December 23, 1960 in Owosso to Charles and Mary (Straza) Weller and was a graduate of Corunna High School.  On September 17, 2011 Wendy married Marty Mansfield on Mackinac Island.  Wendy owned her own business as a pilot car driver assisting truckers with hauling oversize loads.  She had a great love for animals and had taken part in many horse and dog shows.  Wendy and Marty also enjoyed Disney World and would visit every other year for weeks at a time.

Wendy is survived by her husband, Marty; parents: Charles and Mary Weller of Lennon; step-daughter, Cori Mansfield of Illinois; sister, Sue (Tom) Wright of Nevada; niece, Sara (Scott) Bieber of Alaska; nephew, John Luick of Owosso; mother and father-in-law, Joan and William Mansfield of Indiana and brother-in-law, David Mansfield of Indiana.

She is preceded in death by her parents, mother and father-in-law James and Valerie Hutchinson, brothers-in-law Larry Hale, Robert Maier, James Hutchinson, Walt Hutchinson and nephew Zachari Blackburn.

Rosemary was a 1970 graduate of Byron High School and has lived in the Durand area her entire life. She loved her home, flower gardens, bird watching, studying local history and family genealogy. She devoted her life to her husband, children, grandchildren and beloved Annie. She was a peaceful, caring and loving person.

Janet E. Barr, age 88 of Durand, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, September 28, 2017. There are no

Kenneth Charles Toomey, age 85, of Durand, passed away Thursday, September 21, 2017 at his home.  Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 25, 2017 at 3pm at the Byron Baptist Church, Pastor Gary Barber will officiate with burial to follow in the Byron Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel on Sunday, September 24, 2017 from 2-6pm, and on Monday at the church from 1-3pm. 

Kenneth was born in Flint, Michigan on February 3, 1932 to the late Thelma (Cates) Toomey.  He served his country faithfully in the United States Army from 1952-1954.  Kenneth married Shirley Olmstead at the Byron Baptist Church on September 25, 1954, she predeceased him on October 10, 2000.  He then married Diane Tanks on May 19, 2001.  Kenneth was a member of the Byron Baptist Church for 60 plus years, he was a self taught architect and drew hundreds of churches and homes throughout his life.  He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed his go carts and motorcycles including his antique motorcycle.   

Kenneth is survived by his wife Diane, his children; Rick (Ginger) Toomey, Lorry Toomey, Randy (Bev) Toomey, and Lisa (Jeff) Hunter.  His grandchildren; Mandy, Drew, Cody, Nick, Jesse, Michael, and Justin, his great-grandchildren; McKenzie, Teslin, and Dawson, also his brother, Calvin Cates. 

Mr. Toomey was predeceased by both of his parents, his first wife, Shirley, and his brother, Delbert Toomey.

Eula Jean Ellsworth, 85, of Durand, died Wednesday, September 13, while hospitalized in Lansing. She suffered a stroke September 3 at home and was receiving intensive therapy to recover until her condition deteriorated and lead to her death.

She was born October 7, 1931 in Durand, the daughter of Charles and Ruth Nelson. A lifelong Durand resident, she married Arthur Ellsworth July 11, 1953.They lived in the same house just west of Durand for the last 62 years, celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary this summer.

She worked 28 years as a cook in the Durand Area Schools hot lunch program. Following the retirement of her mother from the position in 1974, Jean became head cook in the Durand High School hot lunch program. She remained in that position until her retirement in 1993. Jean was a volunteer emergency medical technician for the Durand/Vernon Area Ambulance Service for many years. She was an auxiliary member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter in Durand.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur; twin sons Michael, and wife Laurie, of Bancroft, and Jeffrey, and wife Susan, of Lansing; daughter, Carol Keyes, and husband John, of Owosso; Grandchildren Justin Keyes of Owosso; Steven Keyes of Henderson; Shelley Schultz, and husband Andy, of Morrice; Jarrad Ellsworth, and wife Stacy, of Durand; Alison Ellsworth of Clarkston; and Sarah Thrubis, and husband Jim, of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is also survived by great grandchildren Ella and Ethan Schultz of Morrice and Audrey Ellsworth of Durand. Also surviving is one brother, Charles Nelson Jr. of Durand.

Funeral Services will be Monday, September 18 at 1 p.m. in the Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Durand chapel. Rev. Ray Strawser will be officiating. A funeral luncheon will follow at the Dutch Hollow Golf Course in Durand. Family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-6 PM.

The family requests the in lieu of flowers, mourners make a donation in Jean’s name to the charity of their choice.


Janet M. Young, age 77 of Durand, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at the Hospice House of Shiawassee County.  A private family service was held. The family is being served by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel.

Janet was born June 12, 1940 in Owosso to the late George and Veronica (Heeney) Bowles.  She attended St. Paul High School in Owosso, graduating in 1958.  On February 23, 1963 she married Roy Young in Owosso and together they raised 3 sons.

Janet was a volunteer with the DVA for many years.  She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Durand, the Durand VFW Women's Auxiliary and the Durand Eagles Auxiliary.  She enjoyed golfing and her card clubs.

Janet is survived by her husband of 54 years, Roy; 3 sons: Kurt (Sam) Young of Georgia, Scott (Kelly) Young of Florida, David Young of Durand; 3 grandchildren: Haleigh Young, Mya Young and Hannah Goul; siblings: Donna Sheldon, Marion Bean and Gerald Bowles as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers: Tom, Raymond and Bernie Bowles and a sister, Geraldine Bowles.

Betty Jean Shook age 95 of Durand passed away Monday, September 11, 2017 at Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, September 15, 2017, at the First Baptist Church of Durand. There will be an hour of visitation preceding the funeral.  Pastor Russell Park will be officiating. Betty Eddy was born June 29, 1922 in Durand, a daughter of Lemuel and Bernice (Dodge) Eddy. On May 15, 1947 she married Bert Shook, and they were married for 70 years. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Durand. She volunteered for the Red Cross blood drives for 30 years. Betty also was a nurses aide for Chevrolet Manufacturing in Flint until she had children. She was a homemaker after that time.

Betty is survived by her husband, Bert Shook; children, Greg Shook and Doug (Viji) Shook; grandchildren, Jeff, Scott, and Jason Shook; great grandson, Cody Shook and best friend, Wanda Lamphere. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Clyde and Richard, and sister, Geraldine.

Betty J. Shepard age 90 of Durand passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at The Lodges of Durand. Betty was born April 26, 1927 in Pleasant View, UT a daughter of John and Eunice (Deem) Pitman. On June 29, 1946 she married Duane Shepard. They were members of the Gaines United Methodist Church. Betty was a past Den Mother for Boy Scouts of America, 4-H Leader, a school bus driver and Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed Golfing, gardening, painting, ceramics, knitting, crocheting and she enjoyed doing seamstress work.

Betty is survived by her husband, Duane Shepard; children, Michael (Bonnie) Shepard, Larry (Dawn) Shepard and Patricia Shepard; 6 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sister, Susan Briscoe; and brother, Jack Pitman. She was preceded in death by both of her parents and her brother, Raymond Pitman.

Mary Ellen (Wyon) Palmer age 59 of Bancroft passed away Monday, August 28, 2017 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Mary Ellen Mogg was born November 4, 1957 in Owosso, a daughter of William and Nellie (Braley) Mogg. On December 21, 1979 she married Henri Wyon. On November 17, 2002 he preceded her in death. On July 7, 2007 she married Doug Palmer. Mary and Doug were members of the Lennon Lions Club and Vittles for Vets together. She enjoyed taking care of friends and family, helping veterans and donating to children in need. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed by the Owosso School System for many years as a paraprofessional working with special education children.

Surviving Mary is her husband, Doug Palmer; children, April (Don) Reidsma, Rachida (Gator) Woodward, Tracy (Brent) Nelson, Michelle (Ben) Quake, Salley Palmer, Brian (Dawn) Palmer, Michael (Michelle) Wyon, Scott Palmer, James (Danielle) Palmer and Rebecca Gibson; 24 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and brothers, William, David (Anna) and Sam (Cheryl). She was preceded in death by her first husband, Henri Wyon; both parents; 2 sisters; 1 brother; 1 grandson; and 1 great granddaughter.

Laura Kay Jones was born March 22, 1963 in Flint, MI a daughter of Chester and Doris (Gilman) Jones. On December 1, 1984 she married Richard Spence. She was a member of the Durand Lioness Club and the First Congregational Church of Durand. She enjoyed cooking and being around her friends and family. She was actively involved in her children's sports and band for school. She loved her children very much. Prior to her retirement, she worked for Dayton Hudson Department store in Flint for many years. She also worked for the Durand school systems as a paraprofessional for several years.

Laura is survived by her husband, Richard Spence; children, Cassandra (Shawn) Maynard and Candace (Bradley) Aldrich; grandchildren, Alara, Tristan, Henry and Rosalie; brothers, Bruce (Sue) Jones and Larry (Marlene) Jones; brother-in-law, Michael (Nancy) Spence; sister-in-law, Karla (Steve) Waldron; nephews, Derek and Ryan; niece, Taylor; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and very good friends. She was preceded in death by both of her parents.

Alexander Thomas Rushka, age 82, of Lennon, passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at his home.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 10:30am at St. Mary Catholic Church in Durand, Rev. Fr. Jonathan Perrotta will celebrate with burial to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel, on Sunday, August 27, 2017 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm.  The Rosary will be prayed at 7pm, Sunday evening at the funeral home. 

Alexander was born in New York, New York on July 25, 1935 to the late Alexander Thomas and Mary Anna (Pavlica) Rushka.  Alexander served his country faithfully in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956.  On June 20, 1969 he married the late Doris Eva Young in Caro, Michigan.  Alexander retired from General Motors as a Journeyman Pipefitter. 

Mr. Rushka is survived by his children; Christopher (Karen) Rushka and Shawn (Lisa) Rushka.  His grandchildren; Aimee (Jason) Monroe, Kristin Rushka, his namesake, Alexander Thomas Rushka III, Ashley (Shaun) Merry, Corey Crossnoe, and his great-granddaughter, Annabelle Simpson. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris on December 8, 2008, and his mother and father in-laws, John and Alta Young.

Mary is survived by her children, Diane Baker of Nashville, TN and Linda (Don) Bagley of Reno, NV; grandchildren, Jodi (Rodd) Rummel and Donald Bagley III; 4 great grandchildren; and brothers, Frank Cordell and Harry Cordell. She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Baker; daughter, Kathy Baker; granddaughter, Kristin Snow; and 6 siblings.
