Durand Fire Department conducted a controlled burn on Sunday morning, October 29th 2017. The home on John Street, on Durand's south side, was ignited at around 8am. Twenty minutes later the structure had collapsed. Special "water curtains" were placed on each side of the home in advance of the burn to help protect neighboring structures. Smoke from the blaze could be seen from miles away. More than an hour and twenty minutes after the training exercise began, the home's rubble was still engulfed in flames and firefighters were using special gear to check for hot spots on the neighboring properties. Durand Now was on scene and grabbed some photos and video. Special thanks to Lisa Custer, wife of Durand firefighter Courtney Custer, for sharing her photos as well.
He's been on the job for a few months and he's had plenty of work to stay busy. Just in case you haven't yet had the chance to get properly introduced, Mr. Nick Remesz, the new Director of the legendary band program at Durand, took the time to answer some questions for us, about himself, his background and his vision for Durand's future.
The 2017-2018 band is off to an exciting start, taking first place in Flight IV at their first contest, the Novi Invitational, last weekend. The Durand Marching Railroaders received a score of 80.525 as well as awards for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Visuals.
