Firefighters were called to a house fire on Clare Street in Durand on Friday night.  While we're told occupants of the home escaped safely, witnesses say thick black smoke from the blaze could be seen billowing into the evening sky from I-69.

Clare Street is tucked away on Durand's west side, off of Spring Street, near Faith Baptist Church on Kent Street.

Supermarket chain was the destination for grocery-getting for 80 years, until stores began to close after an embezzlement and bankruptcy scandal, and an eventual sale to the McColgan family, who operated remaining stores before selling to Al Kessel, former Hamady Vice President, in 1991.
