Operation Freedom II is a fundraising football game and pre-game festival that benefits local veterans through the Durand Area Veterans Relief Fund.
Durand Varsity Football Coach, Jason Gray, organized the first annual Operation Freedom event last year where around $6,000 was raised through ticket and t-shirt sales, the pre-game festival and kickoff jersey auction. Organizers point to community excitement around the event as another reason for its return this year.
The festival begins with a carnival on the high school grounds from 3 to 6pm. Carnival admission is $2 per person or $5 per family and includes inflatables, music and face painting. A complimentary dinner for veterans and a guest will begin at 5:30pm at field-level.
As part of the pre-game events that begin at 6pm, veterans will be recognized with a 21 gun salute. The night concludes with a post-game fireworks show, but that doesn't end the Operation Freedom II events.
On Saturday morning there will be a 5K Run/Walk starting at the middle school parking lot. The cost is $25 and includes a t-shirt and post-race snacks.
A bit of related patriotic trivia: It was on this day in 1892 that the Pledge of Allegiance first appeared in print and in 1989 President Bush proclaimed September 8th as National Pledge of Allegiance Day. In his proclamation he stated "I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day by displaying the United States Flag, by reciting publicly the Pledge of Allegiance, and by participating in other appropriate activities."

Music and Memories -- that's what Saturday night, August 26th, at Optimist Park was all about. That, and, raising money for Durand's Veterans Memorial Park.
An estimated eight to nine hundred fans, young and old, new and "old school," danced the night away to the sounds of 60s and 70s hits performed by friends and former classmates, all who were part of the garage band hey-day.
