Consumers Energy customers in the Vernon area as well as Durand residents whose homes are north of the city limits are experiencing a power outage. Consumers' outage map shows numerous outages across the state as a massive winter storm grips the state, dumping a forecasted foot-plus of snow in northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, significant ice accumulations in the Tri-Cities and northern portions of Shiawassee County, and heavy rains for southeastern Michigan.
Consumers estimates power to be restored to Shiawassee County residents by 1pm on Saturday. Meanwhile, a Winter Storm Warning for Shiawassee County goes into effect at 11am on Saturday. The National Weather Service says that we should expect "significant icing," which could lead to additional power outages, downed lines and trees. "Travel will be dangerous and nearly impossible," the warning states. The Winter Storm Warning for Shiawassee County will remain in effect until noon on Sunday, April 15th.

Ernie and Nikole Hartzell took over the reigns of Stomping Grounds, located at 200 N Saginaw Street in downtown Durand, from Jason and Sherry Rathburn on January 2nd of this year. In the days prior, Nikole told Durand Now "It's been a dream of mine to open a bakery/coffee [shop]." She went on to say "We both feel it was meant to be," speaking both of her family and the Rathburns, who opened Stomping Grounds in May of 2015.
