A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Shiawassee and surrounding counties as a sharp change in conditions is expected on Friday.  The advisory goes into effect at 4am Friday and runs until 7pm.  Rain is expected to change to freezing rain and sleet through the morning hours before changing over to snow.  Up to 4 inches of snow accumulation is expected, on top of an anticipated one tenth of an inch of ice.  Temperatures will rapidly plummet, the agency's notice advises, and winds from 20 to 30 miles per hour will further disturb travel and visibility, which are expected to quickly diminish in the morning hours.  Temperatures are expected to be in the 20s by noon.

Downtown Owosso

Despite bone-chilling sub-zero temperatures, hundreds of people poured onto downtown Owosso streets to usher in the new year with a Times Square-style ball drop.  The ball lowered in a seemingly usual fashion, but moments before midnight, seemed to get stuck.  Then, less than a minute after the clock struck midnight and Auld Lang Syne began playing; fireworks illuminating the sky, somehow the ball broke free and fell, crashing into the platform below.
