Community Mourns Loss of Bertha Neal Principal

"Mr. C." (Robert Cawson) Killed After Head-On Collision Saturday

The Durand community is reeling after the sudden loss of Bertha Neal School's beloved Principal, Robert Cawson.  Cawson was involved in a two-vehicle collision on Saturday near the intersection of Durand and Lennon Roads. Two vehicles collided head-on and both drivers were later pronounced deceased at local hospitals.

The crash happened around 6:30pm on Saturday August 1st. Cawson's vehicle, a 2020 GMC Sierra, was traveling northbound and the second vehicle involved, a 2018 Chevy Silverado, was traveling southbound.

Heavy rain was reported at the time of the accident but authorities have not said whether they believe weather was a factor.  The driver of the second vehicle has been identified only as a 56 year old woman from Byron. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
