Train Derailment Causes Road Closures in Owosso

Six Cars Overturned Overnight

Residents reported hearing a loud crash at around 1:45am on Thursday morning, August 27th.

The City of Owosso reports that a train derailment resulted in up to six rail cars overturning and blocking several area intersections.

The affected rail cars were carrying soybeans. There were no hazardous materials involved in the derailment.

The derailment resulted in road closures at:

Cedar Street
Main Street (M-21)
Chipman Street

We're told those intersections have now been cleared.

Emergency personnel, railroad representatives, and cleanup crews continue to work to clean up the spilled soybeans and safely remove the overturned rail cars. The cleanup and removal process is expected to take some time.

Motorists are asked to avoid the affected areas and use alternate routes.
