Cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal illness caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis.

Rachel Schein, an infectious disease expert at Michigan State University, said some people can run a fever, but the most usual symptoms are prolonged bouts of extreme bowel movements. Frequent diarrhea that can last for weeks as well as cramping, bloating and nausea, per CNN.

Because the course of the illness can stretch into weeks, rapid weight loss is also associated with it.

The causes and locations of this outbreak are being investigated but past outbreaks have centered around contaminated fresh produce.

In addition to Michigan, New York and Ohio seem to be hotspots. The CDC is tracking data nationwide but reports are often taken at the state level first, so the CDC is playing catch-up with its numbers.

Experts say you can help protect yourself by washing produce vigorously, cooking it before consumption and temporarily changing your eating habits.
